Less Than Two Days Until Field's Becomes Macy's
Group To Protest Change
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
Less than 48 hours remain until the
Marshall Field's green turns into
Macy's red.
On Saturday, the flagship State Street store and all the other Marshall Field's stores will become Macy's.
Many of the exterior signs and banners are already up, and on Thursday night, a huge electronic sign at the 111 N. State St. store will be installed.
Most of the features of the old Marshall Field's, including the legendary clock, will remain in place.
Not everyone is pleased about the name change, and one group, called FieldsFansChicago, is organizing a protest on Saturday morning when the name change officially takes place.
"We want to demonstrate, first of all, that Chicago has a lot of pride in our institutions here, and Marshall Field's is one of those institutions that makes Chicago very unique, and we're really not ready to accept a Chicago name being replaced by a New York institution," said Jim McKay, the head of FieldsFansChicago.
"It's like having the Sox and the Cubs replaced with the Chicago Yankees," McKay added. "You wouldn't want that."
