Attorneys: Northwest Suburban Man Is Iraqi Spy

(STNG) Federal prosecutors claim they have evidence that a Des Plaines man is an Iraqi spy.

The government alleges that Sami Latchin, of Des Plaines, is a sleeper spy sent to the United States by Saddam Hussein's regime.

According to a Monday filing, the government has recovered eight files tied to Sami Latchin that were kept by the Iraqi Intelligence Service and recovered after the U.S. Invasion of Iraq.

Prosecutors say the files refer to Latchin, as well as "recruits," "assets" or other alleged contacts of the man.

In the Monday court motion, prosecutors say they will call on a former Iraqi Intelligence officer to verify his signature on the files and that testimony from the so-called recruits or assets can prove the files are legitimate.

The defense has questioned the authenticity of the documents, and Latchin denies the charges.
