1 Dead, 2 Injured In Grayslake Rollover Crash
GRAYSLAKE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
Two 18-year-olds were hurt and a third teenager was killed in a crash that occurred Sunday night when an SUV that was reportedly speeding slipped on the slick roadway and slammed into an electrical pole in north suburban Grayslake.
Around 9 p.m., emergency crews responded to a single-vehicle crash on Rollins Road just east of Sheldon Road, according to Grayslake Fire Capt. John Cokefair.
Three 18-year-old occupants of the SUV involved in the crash were taken to Condell Health Network in Libertyville. The back seat passenger, a male from Round Lake Beach, was pronounced dead at the hospital sometime before 1:30 a.m. The male driver was treated and released and the female front-seat passenger was being treated for injuries that are not thought to be life threatening, according to Grayslake police Sgt. Tom Zurick.
The man killed in the crash has been identified as Christopher Campos, 18, 2100 block of Sedgefield Court in Roundlake, according to Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller.
Campos was pronounced dead at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville at 10:15 p.m. Sunday, Keller said.
A witness on the scene reported that a 2003 Ford full-size SUV was westbound on Rollins Road going about 10-15 miles per hour over the 45 mile per hour speed limit when it changed lanes and slipped on snow between the lanes. The driver lost control of the vehicle and it crashed into a telephone pole. The pole snapped and fell as the SUV continued to travel off the roadway, according to Zurick, who said power was briefly knocked out in the area.
The vehicle flipped and the three occupants were briefly trapped inside, Cokefair said. Crews were able to extricate the occupants quickly.
Commonwealth Edison responded to the scene and was able to turn power back on within 30 to 45 minutes. The Com Ed wires connected to the pole stayed intact during the accident, which allowed for a quick restoration of power, Zurick said.
Rollins Road was reopened just before 12:30 a.m. after being closed for about 3 1⁄2 hours, according to the sergeant.
No citations had yet been issued early Monday and the investigation was ongoing, though alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash.
