Prosecutors are expected Friday to file their response to former Gov.
George Ryan's request to remain free during the appeals process.
Ryan was sentenced last week to 6 ½ years in prison. But if U.S. District Judge
Rebecca Pallmeyer grants his request for an appeal bond, he could remain free for months or years to come while his appeals work their way through the courts.
It is not known when Pallmeyer will rule on the motion.
Prosecutors said Ryan should report to prison on Jan. 4 as scheduled. Appeal bonds are rarely granted.
Ryan's co-defendant,
Larry Warner, filed a similar request for an appeal bond last Monday. He was sentenced to 3 ½ years behind bars and is also scheduled to surrender in January.
