Brother Of Slain Spilotro Brothers Testifies

Patrick Spilotro Told A Packed Court About His 21-Year Quest To Solve His Brothers' Murder

SLIDESHOW: Disastrous Floods Hit Northern Illinois

By CBS 2's John Drummond
CHICAGO (CBS) ― There was unexpected emotion Tuesday at the Family Secrets mob trial.

As CBS 2's John "Bulldog" Drummond reports, suburban dentist Patrick Spilotro told the packed court of his 21-year quest to solve the infamous murders of his two younger brothers, Tony and Mike.

It was Victor Spilotro, another older brother of Tony and Mike, who alerted Patrick Spilotro that the two men had vanished.

Victor Spilotro called saying the brothers hadn't come home.

The silvery-haired Patrick Spilotro broke down on the witness stand Tuesday as he recounted the devastating news about Tony and Mike.

"Something is terribly wrong," Victor Spilotro allegedly said.

By June 15, 1986 the bodies of Tony and Michael had yet to be discovered in an Indiana cornfield.

Within a week the bodies were found. Both had been beaten and strangled. Their murders are at the heart of the government's case.

Patrick Spilotro revealed it was his brothers' grisly slayings that spurred him to begin secretly working as an FBI informant.

He even wore a wire on occasion and at his Park Ridge office performing dental work on reputed mobsters, their wives and defendant Joey "The Clown" Lombardo.

Patient Lombardo told Dr. Spilotro in 1993 "If [I] was there...I was home it would have never happened." Lombardo was in prison at the time of the murders.

In a second dental visit in 2002 Lombardo allegedly elaborated. "Doc...you get an order you follow the order. You don't follow the order you go too."

Then in early 2006 the doctor got a surprise call that then-fugitive Lombardo needed emergency treatment for an infected tooth. He didn't recognize the disheveled Lombardo.

Lombardo came again a week later. Only this time Dr. Spilotro alerted the FBI, who arrested "The Clown" after his nine-month disappearance.

In his zeal to find his brothers' killers Patrick Spilotro even wore a wire in a federal prison when he visited feared hit man Nick Calabrese, who later became the star witness in this trial.
