CHICAGO (CBS) ― Police on Wednesday were investigating the slaying of a doctor, found dead in his office on Michigan Avenue downtown.

Dr. David Cornbleet, 64, was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. Cornbleet, a dermatologist, lived in the 6500 block of North Christiana Avenue in Lincolnwood, officials said.

Cornbleet was found stabbed inside his 12th floor office in the building at 30 N. Michigan Ave. Sources say the call came from his daughter at about 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Chicago police are not confirming reports that said Cornbleet was bound and gagged before being killed.

"He was quite a nice fellow, always upbeat. And a hard-working dermatologist and also a very good family man as far as I could see," said Ronald Wise, a friend of Cornbleet's.

Some say he was vulnerable. He had a unique practice in that he was the only one in that office. He answered his own phone calls, he checked patients in himself.

But others say it's very unlikely that a breach in security might have occurred, especially in a building where tenants need identification cards to get in.

In response to Cornbleet's death, his family released a statement which said in part: "We are all incredibly saddened and shocked by this tragic and horrible loss. Dr. Cornbleet was a devoted father, husband and friend. Selfless and caring, Dr. Cornbleet devoted his life to treating patients and improving their lives. All who knew Dr. Cornbleet will miss him dearly and ask that your prayers are with the family during this trying time."

His violent death remains a mystery and police still have no suspects.

Chicago police are analyzing a video from the building's surveillance camera from around the time of the homicide.

They're also looking for a woman who reportedly said she saw a man with a bloody nose coming out of the elevators in that building.
