Cook County Jail Division On Lockdown After Fight
CHICAGO (AP) ―
A maximum-security division of the Cook County Jail was on lockdown today as authorities investigated a fight between inmates and guards.
Four inmates were sent to area hospitals and three guards sought medical treatment at the jail after the fight Saturday afternoon, said sheriff's spokeswoman Sally Daly.
The fight began when one of the inmates allegedly refused to go outside to exercise and tried to strike a guard, Daly said.
"There doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason to it," Daly said. "It's just the kind of incident you have in a maximum-security facility from time to time."
Three more inmates joined the scuffle, along with three additional guards.
"It ended up being four on four," Daly said. "The officers were able to subdue the inmates and cuff them after a short period of time."
Three officers were treated for bruises at a medical facility on the jail grounds, Daly said.
Three inmates were taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital and Stroger Hospital with similar injuries, Daly said.
A fourth inmate who was not involved in the fight also was taken to a hospital after complaining of chest pains.
All the inmates went to the hospitals in fair condition, said fire department spokesman Larry Langford.
