Criminal Courthouse Cleaned Up For R. Kelly Trial
Kelly Charged With Child Pornography
CHICAGO (AP) ―
The Cook County Criminal Courthouse in Chicago is getting a sprucing up ahead of the pornography trial of rhythm and blues singer R. Kelly.
The work involves installing new wiring and carpeting in the courtroom where Kelly will be tried.
A metal detector is also planned for the entrance to the fifth floor courtroom. And the brass doors of the courthouse are being cleaned and polished.
Officially, the work is partly about making sure there is adequate security arrangements for Kelly's trial, which is sure to draw crowds.
Chief Judge Timothy Evans says court officials have been stressing the need to have the facility -- at 26th and California -- clean and comfortable for the public.
Kelly is accused of having sex with an underage girl and videotaping it. A firm start date for his trial has not been set.
