CHICAGO (CBS) ― Plans for the proposed Chicago Spire skyscraper have gotten the green light from city planners.

The 150-story tower designed by superstar architect Santiago Calatrava advanced through city zoning approval on Thursday. It is to be built at 420 E. North Water St. near Lake Shore Drive and the Chicago River.

The residential tower will stand 2,000 feet. It will house 1,200 condominiums generally to be sold for $1 million to $2 million.

Among the features Calatrava designed for the building are ramps linking the spire to lower Lake Shore Drive and underground parking. There is also a commitment by developer Garrett Kelleher to provide millions for a long-planned park honoring Chicago's African-American founder, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable across the Drive from the spire's site.

Calatrava has gained widespread recognition for his design of the Milwaukee Art Museum.
