Museum's Space Will Double Compared With Navy Pier

CHICAGO (CBS) ― A family fixture at Navy Pier is leaving for a new home.

The Chicago Children's Museum will be moving to Grant Park. It will move onto land provided by the Chicago Park District, and Allstate donated $15 million to make the move possible.

The new museum is almost double the space, so kids can explore science, history and art.

It is scheduled to open in about three years.

The institution, originally known as the ExpressWays Children's Museum, began with two rooms in the Chicago Cultural Center in 1982. It was later housed in Lincoln Park, then in the North Pier Terminal mall on East Illinois Street, before becoming an anchor in the redeveloped Navy Pier when it opened in 1995.
