CHICAGO (CBS) ― Former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun was attacked Frdiay evening outside her Hyde Park neighborhood home, police said. She says she's lucky to be alive after being mugged outiside her Hyde Park home, CBS 2's Mike Parker reports.

Moseley-Braun was returning to her home in Hyde Park from a showing of the play "Wicked" when "an assailant jumped out of the bushes with a knife," according to spokesperson Kevin Lampe.

The man tried to steal her purse by slashing its strap with a knife, according to Lampe, who said Moseley Braun was with a family member at the time.

A passing University of Chicago student, Zachary Treyes-Gibson, came to Moseley Braun's aid and struggled with the assailant, Lampe said. The man then fled the scene.

"I chased him to the next block," said Treyes-Gibson. "He produced what I thought was a gun, but it was a knife, so I backed off a bit. He jumped in an SUV and peeled out."

Moseley Braun "appears to be a victim of an attempted armed robbery," police News Affairs Officer JoAnn Taylor said.

Taylor said the incident occurred about 11:30 p.m. on Friday, and credited witnesses for intervening.

During the struggle, Moseley Braun fell and broke her left wrist. She was treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and has a cast that extends from her hand to elbow, Lampe said.

"She is recovering and in good spirits," Lampe said. "She is very thankful for Zachary."

"I saw him in the street before he attacked," said Moseley Braun. "He had a knife. He just came upon me. I think I was just a random victim. He was just a predator. I got mugged. I'm just grateful to be alive."

Wentworth Area detectives are investigating, Taylor said.
