Chicago Launches Beetle Buster Campaign
City Wants To Make Sure The Asian Longorned Beetle Is Gone
CHICAGO (AP) ―
Officials are asking Chicago residents to be on the lookout for Asian longhorned beetles even though the tree-slaying bugs haven't been seen in the area for two years.
Federal and city authorities kicked off what they call a Beetle Buster Campaign this weekend to raise awareness about the bug. They want to be sure the pest has really been eradicated.
The campaign encourages residents north, west and south of Ravenswood to begin looking for the beetle. More than 1,000 Chicago youths have already volunteered to scour the area this month for the glossy black beetles.
The city's battle against the bug began in 1998. In the hard-hit Ravenswood neighborhood, nearly 1,500 trees were cut down from the infestation.
Residents who believe they've seen one of the beetles are asked to immediately call 312-742-3385.
