Giannoulias Wins Dem. Nomination For Treasurer

CHICAGO (AP) ― Banker Alexi Giannoulias has won the Democratic nomination for Illinois treasurer.

Giannoulias garnered the endorsements of U.S. Senator Barack Obama and several Illinois congressmen and beat out the state party's choice in a heated race.

With 69 percent of precincts reporting unofficial results, Giannoulias had 60 percent while Knox County State's Attorney Paul Mangieri had 40 percent.

Both sought the chance to reclaim for Democrats a treasurer's office Judy Baar Topinka has held for 12 years.

Giannoulias will now face state Senator Christine Radogno, who is unchallenged on the GOP ballot for treasurer.
