'Person Of Interest' Questioned In Shootings

CHANNAHON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A couple was shot and wounded in their apartment in southwest suburban Channahon during an apparent home invasion Monday morning.

The attack occurred about 6:30 a.m. in a first-floor apartment in the 25000 block of Blackberry Lane.

"There were signs of forced entry," Channahon Chief Joe Pena said.

A 21-year-old man and 19-year-old woman, both of whom lived in the apartment, each reportedly were shot in the head by at least one intruder.

The victims' cell phones were taken before the assailant left, and the wounded woman ran to a neighbor's home for help.

Paramedics arrived and took the victims to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center.

The man was listed in critical but stable condition Monday night; the woman was treated and released. Relatives indicated the couple have been together for a year and a half.

A neighbor said another man had been living with the couple earlier this year, but moved out in the spring.

Pena said police do not believe the attack was a random incident.

Almost immediately after the attack, Pena requested the assistance of the newly created Will Grundy Major Crimes Task Force.
"There was no hesitation requesting the resources they were able to bring to this investigation," he said.

Thirty-four detectives and evidence technicians canvased the neighborhood and worked the scene of the task force's first assignment.

Fryer Street residents said a canine unit led police to surround a house there around 2 p.m. Tuesday, but no suspect was located.

However, Pena said police did take "a person of interest" into custody for questioning later that afternoon.

"He is a Channahon resident who is a known acquaintance of both victims," Pena said.

That person of interest and the woman who was shot were being interviewed about 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Channahon Police Station.

During a press conference at the same time, Pena said both victims have previous arrest histories and that police had been to the apartment within the past month.

A neighbor said that visit was prompted by noise complaints during a party.

"As this is currently an ongoing and active investigation, we will not be releasing the names of the victims or specifics of the investigation at this point," Pena said.

Police were seeking other suspects Tuesday night, but Pena said that did not mean other people were definitely involved.

"We're just conducting as thorough an investigation as possible," he said.
