The Colts start the quarter around midfield, and a false start puts Manning in an early hole. Forcing an incomplete pass to Marvin Harrison, who appeared to injure his right leg, the Bears defense manages to get off the field after only three downs.
The Bears take over on the 20-yard line. A nice run by Thomas Jones is nullified by a holding penalty on John Tait. The Bears give the ball right back to Jones, as they continue to try to establish the running game. And that opens up a big pass to Muhsin Muhammad, putting the Bears on the 38-yard line.
Then disaster, and Bad Rex, strikes: The Colts Kelvin Hayden returns a Rex Grossman interception for a touchdown with 11:44 left. No team has ever come back from a deficit larger than 10 points in the Super Bowl. Colts 29, Bears 17.
The Bears come out running from their own 20 as Jones picks up four yards. A Grossman pass to Desmond Clark picks up a first down. Then the nightmare continues. An errant Grossman pass is picked off by Bob Sanders, even though Bernard Berrian had beat the coverage. Two of Grossman's last four throws have been intercepted.
The Bears' defense, which has seemingly been on the field for the entire second half, manages to stop the Colts after the turnover, forcing a punt.
The Bears take over deep in their own territory with just over seven minutes left. Grossman managed to complete three passes to Desmond Clark and the Bears begin the no-huddle offense. Suddenly, Chicago has moved the ball to midfield. But the drive stalls and the Colts take over with five minutes left.
The Colts' Dominic Rhodes slams the ball right up the middle for a huge gain to the Bears 32-yard line as the clock continues to run. Another Rhodes run puts the ball on the Bears 20 yard line with 2:00 left.
The Bears get the ball back with 1:47 left but are out of timeouts.
