Northwestern Trying To Forget Mich. State Rout

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) ― Two days after Northwestern lost its first game of the season, Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald tried to put the 37-20 defeat to Michigan State behind him and focus on Purdue.

The Spartans took advantage of some poor play by Northwestern's special teams and jumped out to a 17-0 first-quarter lead.

Northwestern had a chance to make it 17-14, but C.J. Bacher was intercepted in the end zone, which led to a Michigan State touchdown and a 24-7 halftime deficit.

Fitzgerald says the team didn't execute very well and needs to learn from the experience.

He emphasized the importance of bouncing back.

The Wildcats host the Boilermakers on Saturday.
