Football Returns At North Chicago High After Fight

Entire Football Program Was Suspended After Fight In Game Against Simeon

NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. (CBS) ― The football program at North Chicago Community High School has been reinstated after a five-day suspension stemming from a fight during a game.

The Illinois High School Association reinstated the program on Tuesday, and is once again allowing the North Chicago football team to play at all levels and play in a game this weekend. But the football program will be on probation through the end of the 2010 season.

The suspension was issued this past Thursday, after a fight that happened in a game against Simeon High School on Sept. 4.

The fight started with about five minutes remaining in the first quarter and Simeon leading 21-0. North Chicago players and fans were involved in the incident which lasted about 10 to 15 minutes. The game was called with Simeon declared the winner.

The North Chicago team later forfeited a varsity contest against Vernon Hills.

Seven members of the North Chicago team will remain suspended for their roles in the fight. Eight Simeon players were also suspended, the IHSA said.

North Chicago issued a plan of action to prevent fights like the one on Sept. 4 from happening again, the IHSA said.

"As I said when this suspension was first handed down, I hoped that everyone involved in this incident would take advantage of this teachable moment," said IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman. "I believe that has already begun to occur with the way the school handled this situation. They did not try to make any excuses or pass the blame. The players understand the severity of their actions and the poor judgment they used. It is time for them to return to the field so they can begin to rebuild their program's reputation of practicing good sportsmanship and begin putting this incident behind them."

The North Chicago Warhawks' regular season ends Oct. 23 at home against Grant High. The team is now 0-2.
