If Brett Favre doesn't return to the Jets in 2009 a major arm injury will not be the reason.
According to a published report, Favre is suffering from a torn biceps tendon in his right shoulder and some calcification in the area, injuries which do not require extensive surgery.
Sources tell ESPN.com that Favre, who just completed his 18th NFL season, may not need anything more than arthroscopic surgery to correct the problems.
Favre had moments of brilliance and despair during his first season with the Jets following the much-publicized trade in August that brought him over from Green Bay. The future Hall of Famer threw for well over 3,000 yards and 23 touchdowns, but also tossed a league-leading 23 interceptions. Despite that, he was named to the AFC Pro Bowl squad, a selection which raised eyebrows across the league.
He threw just two TD passes and had seven picks over the final four games of the regular season as the Jets squandered an 8-3 start to finish 9-7 and out of the playoffs. Favre said repeatedly he felt discomfort in his right arm and that likely was the reason why his quarterback rating never crossed 62 over the final five games. He also said the severity of the injury would play a role in determining whether he would return to the Jets in 2009.
Favre will likely take several weeks to weigh his options. Even if he decides to have surgery he may wait until the Jets' head coaching vacancy is filled. The team fired Eric Mangini on Monday after three seasons and is reportedly in hot pursuit of former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher to fill the position.
