He made a simple stop to check a license plate. But it would be his last. CBS 2's Bill Kurtis reports on the murder of Maywood officer Thomas Wood in Tuesday night's Cold Case Minute.
"End of watch:" For those that wear the shield or star, that's the call sign for the end of an officer's shift. It's also the term used when one of their own is killed in the line of duty.
Tuesday night's cold case begins with a traffic stop in Maywood and ends with the first officer on the force being gunned down, and a cop killer still on the loose.
Thomas Wood was the only K-9 officer assigned to the Village of Maywood in 2006.
In the evening hours of Oct. 23, the 37-year-old and his German shepherd partner Daro were on their last hour of patrol when Wood stopped his SUV to run a license plate.
What happened next is a mystery that still haunts the police force.
Shots rang out, six in total, leaving Officer Wood slumped over his steering wheel, unconscious and barely breathing. Each bullet made contact, point blank, execution-style.
Within minutes, Maywood dispatch sent out the call chilling to any brother cop: "Officer down."
Wood was pronounced dead at the scene. The father of five with almost 10 years on the force was the first Maywood officer ever killed in the line of duty.
Three years later, his murderer remains at large.
Knowing it takes just one witness to turn up the heat on a cold case, investigators are asking for your help in apprehending a cop killer.
Detectives are looking for answers as to what exactly went down on the corner of 6th Avenue and Erie Street in the Village of Maywood on the night of Oct. 23, 2006; the night that Officer Tom Wood, dubbed by the local high-schoolers as "Robocop", worked his final patrol.
This October 23rd will mark the third anniversary of Officer Wood's final "end of watch."
Wood's family, friends and fellow brethren will gather at the corner of 6th Avenue and Erie Street on the exact spot he was ambushed and left to die.
There is a $100,000 reward for information surrounding this case.
The Village of Maywood is hoping their reward will be the grease needed to loosen lips, so that by this time next year, this case of a cop killer will be listed on the books as solved.
