A really good magic trick doesn't just leave you guessing. It leaves you thinking, because there's more to magic than meets the eye.
Just watch Chicago illusionist Ryan Shadow.
CBS 2'S Harry Porterfield reports.
Watch closely. They say that seeing is believing. But when it comes to Ryan Shadow, that ain't necessarily so.
Ryan is a magician, and the city is his stage. He's so confident in the illusions he creates that he doesn't mind his audience being up close and personal.
I "started doing it for fun," Shadow said. "People were like 'You're real good at it, you need to start doing something with yourself with it, and take it seriously' – so that's pretty much what I did."
Even during the evening rush hour, Shadow attracts onlookers who pause in astonishment at his illusions as they head home. Recently, he dazzled fans on Michigan Avenue.
"I'm actually kind of shocked and surprised that I've actually made it as far as I have with what I've been doing," he said. "People really gravitate towards me, they really like to see what I have to offer."
A Chicagoan, Shadow spent years teaching himself magic. And he doesn't just perform magic.
"I develop my own illusions as well as I've mastered other illusions and actually improved on other illusions," he said.
Spectator Jasmine Green is impressed. "He was great," she said.
"People really enjoy it," Shadow said. "It makes people happy. Someone could be having the worst day of their life, and they can see what I can do, and it could actually brighten up their day."
Ryan's favorite trick involves a cigarette that appears to levitate. He said he'll never tell how he does it.
Ryan Shadow is creative, magical … and someone you should know.
Ryan has some pretty magical ambitions, too. He hopes to have his own TV show one day.
