Celtics vs. Lakers: A Storied NBA Rivalry

Two of the most storied franchises in NBA history, the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers, will meet for a record 11th time in the NBA Finals starting Thursday night. Kobe Bryant, Paul Gasol, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce will be among those looking to add their chapter to the prolific NBA tale authored by such legends as Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, and perhaps script their names into basketball immortality.

In the teams' first meeting in the finals, in 1959, the Celtics' Bill Russell led Boston to a 4-0 sweep of the Lakers, then from Minneapolis. Russell had 305 rebounds during the 1959 playoffs, almost double the Lakers' Elgin Baylor's total of 156.
