Pittsburgh Steelers star Ben Roethlisberger remains hospitalized after a nasty motorcycle accident in which he was not wearing a helmet.
Most of the Super Bowl quarterback's injuries are on his face.
As CBS 2's Mike Parker reports, there was no helmet to protect him.
He's a guy who loves to play football and ride motorcycles. On Monday, the Steelers quarterback was seriously hurt when his motorcycle slammed into a car at a Pittsburgh intersection. His jaw and nose were broken and he suffered severe injuries to both knees.
"I just saw his face. I saw blood," said witness Lauren Mizak.
Roethlisberger was not wearing a safety helmet and never has.
He was riding an $11,000 Suzuki Hayabusa, described by the company as the "fastest production bike on the planet." It is capable of hitting 189 miles an hour. The company advises to always wear a helmet.
In Chicago Monday night, Nicholas Thayer roared through River North on his big Harley. He wasn't wearing a helmet and also never does.
"For me, it's a free kind of feeling. I do a lot of thinking. You get away from stuff," Thayer said.
That reason does not convince a motorcycle safety teacher.
"I understand the appeal of wind in the hair and sun on my face and all that," Jeff Banyots said. "I would prefer to have high tensile plastic between myself and the pavement."
Illinois and Pennsylvania are two of 28 states that do not have helmet laws.
Roethlisberger is in serious but stable condition. His future in football is in doubt.
