Remembering Randy Salerno 1963-2008
CBS
Viewers share their thoughts and memories of CBS 2 Morning anchor Randy Salerno, who passed away in a snowmobiling accident late Thursday night.
He was one of the best and the funniest news guys out there. He will be missed!!
My heart felt condolences go out to his family at CBS and WGN and his family at home!!
Rest in Peace Randy, you'll be missed.
--The Kapelanski Family, Des Plaines, IL
Randy made me laugh each morning. I will miss him. I already do.
--Rhea Jones
I drafted Randy as a 13 year old for my Babe Ruth team in Crystal Lake. At that time he was quite big for someone 13 and was a little awkward but shown much talent. He was my number one pick. He was on my team for three years and I watched him grow into one of the best pitchers in our league. He was a good kid who knew how to take coaching. We would play games and practice at Veterans acre in C.L. His father was at every practice and game, very unusual for kids that age. I never kept in touch with Randy after Babe Ruth and would catch him on the news here and there. My biggest regret is that I did not know him as an adult. There is a charity event this weekend in C.L. and he was going to be there. I was hoping to finally get to catch up and now so tragically his life was caught short. I really have not thought about Randy much since Babe Ruth but this week I can not get him off my mind. My heart and prayers go out to his family. --Ed Funk
Like so many other Chicagoans who watched Randy, Roseanne, Susan & Ed we will truely miss him. Our heart goes out to his family and his news family. I also remember watching Randy & Roseanne on channel 9. I was so happy when they joined the channel 2 news team. The whole group just seemed to fit in with one another. Randy you will be missed but not forgotten. Just the thought of not seeing you every morning brings tears to my eyes. I feel like I lost a part of my family.
Our deepest sympathy to his family and friends,
--Gil & Kathy Elizondo
I feel like I personally know Randy and the CBS Chicago morning team. I sat staring at the TV with my mouth open in disbelief when Vince read the announcement as tears streamed down my face. I prepare for work every morning with the morning team. On the way to work, I would call my sister who also wakes up to the morning team every morning and comment on the crazy things Randy would have said. Randy's wit and dry humor was so quick that at times I would have a delayed reaction to the joke! I will miss Randy we all will miss Randy. To the wife and family of Randy Salerno, I hope these emails will bring you some comfort just knowing this was a great guy and friend that was loved by many.
May God continue to bless the Salerno family.
--Nita
My thoughts and prayers go out to Randy's two families...his Crystal Lake family and friends and his other family at CBS. He will be missed by everyone. I will miss seeing his cheerful face and his wonderful sense of humor in the morning. Roseanne, I know this must be extremely difficult for you to have lost your very special friend. You two had a very special relationship that was seen for all the years you worked together. My daughter and I watched you on WGN for many years. You made our day many mornings! God Bless,
--Marianne Bass
Simply stated, I am so sorry for your loss. Randy's humor always made me chuckle and put a smile on my face
(the frozen moose). The way he interacted with Roseanne, Suzanne and Ed was an example of how all co-workers should work together. Plus being a great family man oh what a loss. --Kathy
I also lost my brother suddenly in a accident and it's very hard to see your loves one go, as well unfair, but I believe that Randy and
my brother are in heaven, right next to God. My Prayers and Thoughts to The Salerno's Family and Friends.
--The Stilling Family, Woodstock IL
Dear Friends at WBBM:
I was so sorry to hear of Randy's death. My wife and I loved watching Randy on the 11AM news and we both cried when we heard of his passing. He was a wonderful "Chicago guy", he was one of us and will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, children and his family at WBBM.
God bless and keep you all.
Sincerely,
--Ken and Sara Arkow
Being retired, we are not early morning people, but it was a must to watch him, Roseanne and our CBS, friends at 11:o'clock news, he will be missed. "ETERNAL MEMORY RANDY." --Mary Berzinis and family
My sincere condolences to Randy's family and co-workers.
My prayers and thoughts are with Randy's family.
Randy will be missed, but never forgotten.
--Susana
Every day I begin my morning at 5 A.M. and the TV goes on and there is Channel 2. I can't function unless I see the weather, traffic and see what kind of silliness the guys can come up with - it makes the day more enjoyable and bearable. During the holidays I got such fun out of the stocking stuffers and it seems that Randy was always able to make the people around him happy and that made those of us watching happy.
My heart goes out to his wife, children and his parents. No parent ever expects to loose a child before their time here on earth has been ended, it has to be the worst feeling in the world, I know, I lost a child long ago. May God guide his family in this time of need and all should know that our prayers are with them.
--D. Haag, Willowbrook
A number of years ago, Randy Salerno anchored WGN's Saturday morning news program. I made it a point of tuning in each weekend because of the human touch he added to the newscast. There was nothing stiff about Randy and his own sense of ease and being grounded transmitted over the airwaves to those who viewed the broadcast even when the news was difficult to report and to listen to. He carried that same magnetism with him over to WBBM TV/CBS 2.
My heart breaks for his widow and children, his parents & siblings, for all who knew him personally and professionally. My prayers go out to all who loved Randy & particularly to his friend Scott Hirschey.
--Julia Webb
Randy Salerno was a very special person, husband, father, son, brother and friend. Everyone who touched Randy seems to have been blessed with his presence.
Watching Randy & Roseanne in the morning while getting
ready for work always put a smile on our faces and we were
able to face the world....Randy is missed.
Our love and prayers go to his family and friends,
--Janet & Jerry
What can you say that has not already been said about this wonderful human being? I am amazed at the wonderful tributes said about him.
I enjoyed watching him every morning also and my heart breaks for his family and the family at CBS. May your hearts heal soon.
Randy was truly one of a kind.
--Barbara G from Ind.
Thank you CBS and the Salerno family for allowing us to participate in Randy's final farewell
--Long time Randy fan!
Thanks for allowing the viewers to watch Randy's funeral via the webcast. We viewers will miss him too.
--Lisa
My heart breaks for the loss of an incredibly talented and wonderful man. Please know that the family, friends, and CBS family of Randy will be long kept in my prayers.
Thank you for sharing Randy's incredible gifts with us. May the tears we have all shared help us to wash some of the grief away and help us to remember the good times.
Blessings to you all,
--JoAnne Brady
When I heard of Randy's death on that Friday morning, it was as if I was hearing about my brothers's death (which happened a long time ago) all over again. Randy seemed like family.
Randy had terrific humor and wit. My brother, Joey, was fun and funny.
Randy loved what he did for a living. Joey wanted to be a sportscaster on TV one day.
Randy's family was most important to him as our family was important to my brother. Even though both Randy and Joey have left us physically, neither one of these charmers will be forgotten. Joey passed away September 11, 1968 at the age of 14. He is always in my heart and thoughts. Emily Paura Divarco
--Mount Prospect IL
Our condolences to Randy's family and co-workers. It is a great loss for us not to be able to have him in the mornings to get us started with our day.
Thank you,
--Skeets and Morales family from Romeoville
I just wanted to thank Mrs. Irene Salerno and family along with CBS for allowing us the opportunity to say goodbye to Randy. I did not know him personally, however,he touched my life with laughter whether i was getting ready for work years ago or up early with a newborn. Recently I watched him while getting my kids ready for school. I really needed the closure you provided.
Always keep Randy in your hearts for he is never far away. If you close your eyes and remember all the happy times with him, you will most certainly feel him near you. God bless Randy's wife and children and his work family as well. He was a bright spot in a lot of people's lives and will not be forgotten. I only wish I had the opportunity to meet him.
Sincerely,
--Laurie Ferdinardo, Plainfield IL
I just wanted to thank CBS 2 and Randys family for allowing us, the viewers to have a part in his funeral. I watched it on my computer and laughed and cried along with you all. Randy touched so many lives...I only hope that his family both personal and professional can find peace. He will be missed by all of us! --Rachele, Aurora, IL
I watched Randy on the WGN News for years. When he went to CBS, I flipped back and forth because I still liked Roseann and Larry on WGN. When Roseann left WGN, so did I. I once saw Randy in a local restaurant. He was with a large group of family, but he still took the time to greet me, only because I recognized him from the news. That's just the type of person he was, the kind you don't see much of anymore. I'm glad I spent my mornings with him and the CBS crew. I feel honored to have had the opportunity to start my morning with all of you. May God bless you and help you and his family through this difficult time.
--Renee Witt
God Bless Randy Salerno, his wife and family, friends, work buddies and the millions of people he touched. We know you will be watching over Chicago and all of us from Heaven. Never good-bye -- so long for now.
--The Downings, Green Oaks, IL
I watched Randy and Roseanne for years every morning getting ready for work. When I heard during the newscast Friday that Randy had been killed I broke down, I totally lost it. I had never personally met Randy, but I watched him and Roseanne every single day and I felt as though I did. It felt like I lost a brother, it torn me up. I can only imagine what this has been like for his wife, children and family. How Roseanne has kept going and did her newscast on Monday morning with that empty chair is a true tribute to Randy and how much everyone loved and respected him. Randy was a scream and I totally got a big kick out of him and his comical antics. There was and will only be ONE Randy. Randy touched so many lives and the notes of condolences are a touching tribute to just how much he was loved and honored. Randy, Roseanne, Ed and Susan had a chemistry that you could feel while watching all of them as they worked together, unlike any other news station. You could tell they geniunely enjoyed what they did and had a great time doing it, along with making all of us laugh and start our days on a happy note. May God's peace, love and grace be with be with you all as well as Randy's family. Randy rest in peace, you will be remembered always. God bless......
--Toni Adduci, Lansing, IL
I watched Randy's funeral and I still can't believe it. My mind is trying to find a way to turn this all around...to make it not so. I can't begin to imagine the heartbreak his family is experiencing. May God bless and watch over his wife and children and give them the strength to carry on.
--Patti L., Aurora, IL
I wanted to be there with you all last night and this morning, but I always have felt that a funeral should be for the family and close friends, and I did not want to intrude on that. I know it had to be a tough decision to have the funeral broadcast live, but I want to thank you so much for doing that. It was a way that I could say goodbye to a wonderful man without intruding on the family's last moments with him. I was lucky enough to meet Randy on the Anita Dee cruise and will cherish those memories forever. To Irene and children I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your wonderful husband with me every morning. To Roseanne, Susan, Ed, Kris, and Bill I will be there every morning supporting you as you continue to do the best job possible. My prayers are with you and I thank you all so much for sharing this wonderful man with us all.
--Leslie Eberwein
Thank You for broadcasting the service today. Randy holds a special place in my heart. I have started my day with Randy for many years and feel like I know him. Now more than ever because of all the lovely memories his family has shared on the air over the last week. I was so happy to be able to be part of the service today by watching over the web. My family is so sorry for your loss. He will be missed but never forgotten!
--Laura Swarts
I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the entire Salerno family and the CBS 2 Chicago News family. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Think of all the joy that he added to your lives. This help to sustain you in the days to come. --Geneva Phillips
My mom shares memories of Randy's career with WGN. She watch him every day.
Although I didn't watch the morning news everyday the attention that has been made to Randy's wonderful life only makes me more saddened that I didn't know him or watch him each and every day. My heart goes out to everyone who was ever been touched by Randy and may he now rest in peace. --Gary Wemple
I would like to extend my condolences to you all. I am in utter shock for your loss. He was an amazing person and to listen to his friends and family remember him was extremely touching. I will keep you all in my thoughts in prayers. God bless his family and friends.
--Sincerely, Tracy
Randy and I were journalism majors at ISU. In 1984, we stayed for summer classes and we did our radio projects together. I still have the tape of our final project called "Randio and Mar-gar-et", a silly spoof on Romeo and Juliet. I'm not sure if I've ever laughed harder than that summer! Randy and Susan's bantering was very reminiscent of how I remember interacting with him. Although Randy and I did not keep in touch, I followed his career. My children and I woke up to CBS morning news daily. I feel like I can't shake the pain of my heavy heart. I can hardly imagine the pain of those who were with him daily. The legend that Randy has become is an inspiration to live life to it's fullest, never forgetting to laugh! Thank you for providing all the humorous clips on line. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers, along with his beautiful wife, children, parents, siblings and friends.
--Margaret Walsh-Grouzard, Northbrook, IL
I Kept Thinking, Who Am I Going To Have Coffee With At Five In The Morning? He Was Like A Younger Brother, A Member Of The Family - Warmth, Charm, Humor, Intelligence, Really Don't Do Randy Justice - My Daughter & I Met The Morning Crew At The "Breakfast At The Bean" Stunned Would Be Such A Gross Understatement - My Deepest Sympathy To The Salerno Family
--Jerry Wickman, Western Springs, Illinois
I have been getting up at about 4 every morning for the last several years. I would just wait for the news to come on so I could see Randy and the rest of the news teem. It was what started my day, seeing the funny antics of the news teem. It may no difference who was off it just wasn't the same. I will miss him for he was part of my day. Our prayers will be with both of his families the Salerno' and the rest of the cast of the best NEWS show on TV.
He will be missed but never forgotten
--Wayne and Joanne Miller, Wilmington, IL.
I never was so intent on watching the news channel, until Randy Salerno. His grace, good humor and genuiness created that flame that attracted us to be vigilant and devoted followers. We should have made T-shirts! I could say his King Tut episode was "the best", but truly Randy always seemed to have yet another "best" to give us...we just to wait. While many others work to impress the audience; Randy went a different path; just being genuine, staying true to himself, and that made him the best. You saw that in him during every show. There is a Frost poem which, I think, sums up Randy. In The Road Not Taken, it says "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I - I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." Randy's choice of path truly made all the difference. He will be sorely missed. --Minnie Dabney
Randy was a great person who wasn't too proud to say he was from Crystal Lake. He was a joy to talk to and we were honored to have had the opportunity to discuss several different fundraising ideas with him. Our son is a classmate of Randy's son Charlie and it wasn't unusual to see Randy at school at any given time. He spent time in their classroom and helped out whenever and wherever he was needed at school. It was always refreshing to see someone with his success just being a "good ol hometown guy". Crystal Lake just got a whole lot smaller with the loss of Randy!
He will be missed!
--The Bott Family, Crystal Lake
This is just from another viewer.
My mornings started with Randy, Roseanne, Susan, and Ed. Then, not to forget, there was Kris and Bill also.
This team made up from people that were at various TV stations was the very best Chicago News Team on TV.
I would watch them for as much of the two hours they were on as I could. Always interesting always some fun with the serious.
Randy's sense of humor was something else. You could see how Randy wit would spark both Roseanne and Susan as they would slide right into his humorous ways. Many times without being able to stop laughing.
To read what has been written about Randy has brought more insight, and a feeling of deep loss for his close friends and family. My prayers are with you all. --Bob Habich
My heartfelt sympathy to Randy's family, friends and co-workers at Channel 2. Even though I did not know him personally, I am truly saddened to hear of this devastating loss. --Joe K., Gurnee
To all of you at channel 2, I was so saddened by Randy Salerno's death. I watch the morning news every weekday before work; and I will continue to watch as I love all of you and can't start my day without you, but I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family at home and his family at work. --Judy Powers
Dear WBBM:
I never met Randy, nor had I ever seen him on the morning news. But after watching some of his work posted on your website, I can see what a loss his passing has been. He was a wonderful talent and you can tell he was a great guy. My condolences to all.
--Matt Stevens, WOIO-TV Cleveland
I just wanted to thank CBS2 for allowing us to "attend" Randy's funeral via the live webcast and to bring some closure to this week of mourning. The grief I am feeling for a man I never actually met is overwhelming to me and makes me realize all the more how hard this is for his family and friends.
I also want to commend Rosanne, Ed, Susan and Kris for their professionalism during this week. How difficult it must have been to come in to the place of such happy memories without Randy... They showed us true grace and helped us to deal with our own grief. They are a class act!
Randy will be missed so very much. Life must go on but it's just a little bit less fun now.
Rest in peace, Randy.
--Terri Murphy
To Randy's beloved family, wonderful CBS 2 family and countless friends,
Hearing of the news of Randy's tragic accident last Thursday, sent me immediately to the computer to send a condolence email (along with countless others) over the supreme loss we all share. However, now I write to thank you for allowing me the privilege of sharing this morning's funeral service for Randy. Hearing the words both in prayer and in loving tribute somehow made the feelings of incredible sadness lessen a bit, as another of God's Earthly Angels, has gone home. In doing so, he has left a legacy of kindness, compassion, hilarity and love for all things breathing he is, was and will forever be "just Randy" one of a kind; loved by many and remembered by all. Simply Irreplaceable . . .
Thank you again CBS 2, not only did you allow us to share his life with him every day on the air, but in the web cast of his service this morning, you also enabled us the opportunity to say "farewell and Godspeed, my friend."
My heartfelt prayers are with his Irene, Haley, Slone and Charlie as they are with his extended family and his CBS family. Surely your memories are amazing, but so is the loss. How I pray that these words from one you've never met, but who cares so deeply for you all, may bring you a bit of comfort in an inconsolable time.
God keep you all,
--Linda Krucks, Chicago
Good morning. There are no words to tell you how sorry I am for his family, friends and all of you wonderful people that he worked with too. How much laughter he brought to me while watching him at channel 2 and dare I say channel 9 as well. hahah You see how his laughter is contagious!!! He brought the best of both channels to us, his viewing audience, thank you! My daughter would call me at work JUST to say, "mom did you see them today?" we would be crying so hard from laughter at his antics, and our favorite description of him and his coherts
"jackass"----meant with the sincerest of compliments and just for providing us with such humor the first thing in the morning. How his partners in crime could sit there without completely falling on the floor from laughter was beyond us------but wait a minute
. The more I think about it
they COULDN"T!! They would fall apart just like us!! He was so down to earth and " full of the devilment" as us Irish would say!! "Good on ye Randy Salerno, good on ye!"
As I sit here with tears in my eyes from watching the telecast from my work desk, the lovely words from everyone and yes lots of laughter at a funeral, as the pastor mentioned, I also have thoughts of my own father who passed away two years ago today, so I have a double reason to celebrate with laughter and tears today as well. As I look at my father's picture on my desk from his hill in Ireland I am hoping that wherever they are, watching from above, that daddy meets up with Randy as I think daddy could hold his own with humor and love with Randy. My heart aches for his wife and children and SO much for his best friend.
You have celebrated Randy's live so beautifully, all of you. Thank you for sharing it with us and I hope in time the tears will give through with laughter when thinking of him, and you will all feel his presence with you always. That is how I get over loss and grief, I hope you can too.
--Sincerely, Pat Fluhler
My heart breaks for all of you in the loss of Randy. I too lost my husband 2 years ago to a tragic work accident. We have a beautiful daughter who was 5 when Daddy was taken to heaven to prepare it for us. I want Irene to know that she is not alone. She will find the strength to get up in the morning because of the special marriage and awesome memories that they made as family. Those memories are what is going to keep him alive in their hearts. There are so many ways to keep his memory alive for you and the children. Just remember that you need to do things in your own time and what feels right. I live in the Crystal Lake area so if you ever need to talk or your children, please feel free to e-mail me. Just remember Randy will always be a part of you and will always be in your heart. My thoughts and prayers are with you. --Shannon
If a man's wealth is measured by his friends, Randy must have been one of the wealthiest men on Earth. How lucky you all were to have shared your lives with him - such a person does not come into everyone's life. Cherish your memories for they cannot be taken from you and he will live each and every day within you. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
--Unsigned
Unfortunately, I didn't watch too much of the 2 Morning News, but do remember watching Randy and Roseanne on Channel 9, when I could. What a tragic loss and after watching all of the clips and his services earlier this morning, I am sorry I missed out on waking up with the 2 morning team over the last several years. My heart goes out to his family and his Channel 2 family as well. Just remember that he is looking down on all of you every day and with a big smile and passing down some of his wit, charm & humor in other special ways. God bless all of you and my thoughts and prayers are with you.
--Sincerely, Nancy S., Plainfield, IL.
Randy's quick wit was a wonderful way to get my day started - by challenging my brain. I needed to pay attention because he was never predictable. His partners of Roseanne, Ed, Susan and Bill knew how to use that wit to energize all. --B. Bozek
I didn't know Randy except from TV. I saw Rose Ann switch from Channel 9 to Channel 2 and then I saw her side-kick Randy come over and I was hooked. I loved watching the two of them they were great together. My heart goes out to everyone at Channel 2 and of course his family.
--Kathy
He is somebody I look forward to watching in the morning together with his other co anchors. Even though i have not met him he is truly somebody who made my waking up in the morning something to look forward to with his wit and sarcastic remarks and playful attitude my mornings are complete. He wil be truly missed. Our prayers are with his family. We have just lost a great man, but rejoice for he is with our Lord, our savior Jesus Christ.

I have watched Randy on Ch. 9 & 2 throughout the years and he and all of you have become like friends. What a bright way to start my day with Randy, Roseanne, Ed & Susan! It will never be the same.
--Jean Hooks
Randy will be missed by millions. God bless his family, friends and those of us who enjoyed his reporting and humor. It has truly been a lovely cruise. CBS please continue to show the car pooling commercial where Randy is the driver. --Valerie
I will be praying for his family and to you guys too, so sad you guys not seen him in the morning working, is been a chocking to me when I heard the news, but God will comfort us and his family, he was a great guy, funny too. We all miss him, but just think of this we will see him in Heaven.
God Bless You All!!!
--Maribel Segui
I can't believe that something so tragic could happen to such a great man. I loved his fun and humor every morning. He and Roseanne were a great team that could laugh at each other and themselves. Randy was like a son that I never had, his parents and family should be so proud. You did a wonderful job teaching him the important values in life. Not many people can be so successful at work and at home. Why did someone so full of life and potential have to leave so soon?
I can't tell you how moving it was to see Randy's chair empty next to Roseanne. That said it all, like the rider-less horse during President Kennedy's funeral. Another young man gone too soon! We will miss you Randy, you will be impossible to fully replace but your memory and lessons that you taught us will last forever.
For the CBS team my heart breaks for you, I can see that he meant so much to you all. Now you have a special angel watching over you and yes Ed he will speak to you in your ear when you least expect it.
--Diane, Streamwood, Illinois
I wish to express my deepest sympathies to the Salerno Family and to Randy's CBS Family and Friends. It is a heartbreaking loss. Within the last year, I switched from another station's morning news show to yours simply because I enjoyed watching Randy, Roseanne and the rest of the team. Your warm, humorous and casual style was and still is a nice way to start the day.
Randy had a certain way about him that brought perspective and balance to the news for me. He was a breath of fresh air. Thank you for all the memories you have provided on air and on your website...it has helped me to better get to know Randy and who he was as a person.
--Peace, Deb
I had the pleasure of meeting Randy when my son and his oldest daughter went to elementary school together. He truly was a good person and will be greatly missed. My heart and prayers go out to his family.

My mom shares memories with me of Randy's career while with WGN.
She watched him every day. My heart goes out to everyone who has ever been touched by Randy and may he now rest in peace.
--Gary Wemple, Aurora, Ill.
I have been unable to watch your newscast in the morning this week, which I have done for so many years, because it started my day off with all I needed to know and now, my day has been started with tears and sadness. Randy was such a regular guy with quick wit, but never biting or hurtful or mean. I feel like a member of my family is gone.
God bless you all and may we all try to get thru this, not understanding, but accepting with the love of each other for support. You are a close-knit group of such good people.
Thank you for helping me start every day.
--Ellen Radak
To the Salerno and the CBS family:
The darkness you are facing with the loss of Randy will go away at dawn.
Now you have just the light of the stars to help you carry on.
But while the darkness lingers have faith that God knows your every thought and feels every tear.
May you find strength in your wonderful memories of Randy.
--E. Hughes

My heart goes out to his family.
One day we will all be Together and share Great Moments.
Take care Randy and watch over your Family. :)
--Rich Maluchnik
I awoke Friday to the horrible news about Randy, and I've been in disbelief since. Randy was the heart and soul of my favorite morning news team. My heart breaks for his family, both at home and at CBS 2. I've never deleted his gracious replies to e-mails I've sent him over the past couple of years, and now I never will. --Christopher Ciaccio, Lockport, IL
My sympathies to each of you at Channel 2 and to Randy's entire family. I loved Randy's sense of humor, dry wit and delivery. He was truly the whole package! Your team made it so easy to get up in the morning. Your chemistry together was amazing and worked better than any news team in Chicago. Many a morning I've had to catch a later train because I was having too much fun watching you and laughing at one of your segments. To the Salerno family & CBS Family,
A beautiful life came to an end, he died as he lived, everyone's friend.
How true this is as you read through the pages of thoughts and prayers
Chicago sends to Randy's families. --Jacqueline Levandoski
I have lost a good friend. Although we have never met, every morning started with Randy and the rest of the Channel 2 team. I looked forward to the positive energy and info in a happy, fun format. I have enjoyed Randy's down to earth style, humor and smiles as my day starts. Randy delivered the news with great integrity and authority yet added wit and human factor. How I would laugh. My thoughts are with the Salerno family, their friends, the news team and Chicago. --Andra Swiebocki
What a tribute to a l man and his life.
Today as Randy's life is celebrated, I was forced to reflect...And what I have realized is, One could only hope that they could ever be as loved, respected, or cherished as much as Randy is. His parents, wife, children, brother, sister and friends must be so proud.
His life is celebrated by thousands, he was loved, honored and respected by thousands....If each of us went out each day to live the way Randy lived....It would be a much better world.
My wife was the one who wrote in regarding how Randy made her laugh even during her worse chemo days.... THANK YOU RANDY for making a difference in our lives, and the lives of thousands.

Dear Chicago Morning News Team:
I met all of you on the 2006 Breakfast Cruise. All of you were just so warm and friendly--it was such a great morning. It bonded me to you forever! When I met Randy, I was so pleased to see that such a really handsome (even more than he appeared on tv), man with such a powerful position was so "regular". He was so funny, interesting and interested in speaking with each of us. Just a truly great guy.
I can see the pain of his loss on each of your faces (especially Roseanne), but having lost my best friend last year, I can say I and all of your faithful fans, will miss him too. We loved him as well and won't forget him. But know how blessed you were to have had the opportunity to have him in your lives, even if the time was way too short.
I feel certain Randy would not want you to spend too much on mourning, but rather to lift a beer to him at a Cubs game.
Keeping the entire news family and his own family in prayer for strength,
--cynthia draper hill

Last Thursday I was packing my bag to go on a snowmobiling weekend when I heard the news about Randy. We were going to be in an area very close to Plum Lake. It was all I could think about over the weekend while riding, it caused me to drive a little slower and a bit more cautiouslly. Never met him but he seemed cool! --Unsigned
Roseanne, Ed, Susan and Others,
I love watching you guys interact each day. I wasn't able to watch your morning news each day until I retired in 2004. All of you started my day off on a bright note. Randy was special. I loved when he called Ed Eddie. Such a dry wit! I loved it. All of you are in my prayers. Continue being who you are; Randy would love that. May God bless his family.
--Love, Aurelia Lawrence
I am a third grade teacher that had Randy's daughter Hailey in third grade, Randy was a wonderful man , he came to school to help out, he was our narrator for our fundraiser, we often saw him in the hallways visiting or involved in some type of activity, he will be sorely missed.
--Ellen Breen, 3rd Grade North Ele.
We relocated to the Chicago area about two years ago. My husband came out before me and our girls, and I remember him saying, "I found us a great news station to watch. You'll love the CBS morning news." And he was right...I tried it out right after we moved, and have been a faithful viewer ever since. Randy made me laugh out loud at least once every morning...what a great way to start out the day! I cried when I heard the news last Friday. I know I don't know him personally, but he has been a part of my morning for the last two years. I am going to miss him! My prayers go out to his colleagues, friends, and family. I am so, so sorry for your loss. --Brenda Beitzel
Since moving to Chicago 2 years back, Randy's was the first face I would wake up to every morning his straight faced humor and sarcasm was what made me want to wake up and listen to more. Even though I never knew him I know I will miss him. My prayers and wishes for strength to his lovely family Randy, hope you are making someone laugh up there as much as you did down here. --Deena John
My deepest condolences go out to Randy's family and friends. I only knew him from the morning news broadcast, but after hearing so many wonderful stories and comments, he was a remarkable person who meant so much to so many. He will be greatly missed. --Kim
First I would like to convey my condolences to Randy's family including his TV families.
Randy is one of the reasons I made it through my breast cancer treatment. During my chemo and radiation when I was feeling really down I would turn to Channel 2 news at 11:00 (I couldn't believe the news would be a pick me up) and watch Randy. He was a person who came into my house on a daily basis, via TV and make my day. To me he told the news like it was. Seems like his feelings on some of the stories were the same as mine.
Randy will be missed by a lot of people like me. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, daughters, son, parents, brother, sister, his TV family both past and present and other colleagues.
--Terri

This was so much comfort to the viewers I truly believe this is what Randy would have wanted. Please except condolences from our family and always remember the Serenity Prayer- "Dear Lord- Please help me to except the things I cannot change, change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference". I did not know Randy Salerno personally, but I work near the old CBS building, and would walk past him on occasion during his morning breaks. He would always smile at me and the other passerby's, and from that, I could sense what a kind human being he was. He also grew to be one of my favorite news anchors, as he delivered the news with good humor and charm. His passing deeply saddens my heart. My sincerest condolences go out to his family. God Bless Randy Salerno.
--Elena, Chicago's Streeterville

Dear Irene, Kids and Salerno Family:
We lived in Crystal Lake for 30 years. Three years ago retired to Sun City Huntley.
We were very proud of Randy. So proud of the time he spent with the kids at North School.
We have friends that lived by him growing up in Coventry - a loving family - playing ball in the front yard.
We are devastated. Irene be strong for the Kids and Family.
We love all of you,

My heart is heavy filled with sadness for a man I only came to know through this very horrible event.
All that I have learned is from everyone's thoughts, last fond memories, and the very gracious "keeping it real" words from his wife Irene during Randy's funeral.

He truly epitomizes the strength of what a man should be to his colleagues, co-workers, friends, family, and even a stranger like me.
