Send Us Your Memories Of Randy

Viewers share their thoughts and memories of CBS 2 Morning anchor Randy Salerno, who passed away in a snowmobiling accident late Thursday night.

To the entire Morning News Team;
Thank you for this morning. Your decision to do the broadcast as you did was just what we all needed. Thank you for your honesty, sincerity, courage, and, as always, your humor. I was so touched by all of you this morning that I wanted to reach through the screen and hug all of you.
As you move through these difficult days ahead, please remember that there are a lot of us who think of you as family, who feel that we know you even though we've never met, and who are all thinking about you. Give our collective best to Randy's wife and family.
Sincerely,
Jim and Casey in Chicago

I always started my workday with Randy and Roseanne. I knew I would get some laughs from Randy, and that he would help my day start off right. He was such a good-natured, humorous person. I felt like I knew him personally. I'll deeply miss Randy – his devilish grin; his wry wit; his insights, always some little quirky thing you hadn't thought about, and his top-notch news delivery. I don't know who can replace him in the morning. I wish Godspeed to someone who was like a friend to me.
--DELORES J. BROOKS

Even though it's been a few days since the terrible news, it still feels like yesterday that Ed said, "There's a light at the end of the tunnel.", and Randy replied with his incredible humor and wit and said, "and it's not a train.", and you all signed off for the last time together. I will ALWAYS miss him and feel like crying whenever I really think about how great of a newsanchor and person he was.
--Ja'Quee Leonard

I grew up as Randy's neighbor in Crystal Lake. My 4-year old son would actually watch him in the mornings. When I told Randy this, he said to make sure he was watching the next day. Randy went out of his way to give a warm welcome to his youngest viewer Cameron that morning. Cam still has the copy and we will always treasure the little things that Randy was willing to do for people.
--Rich Yelle, Crystal Lake

I'm originally from Chicago but moved to Hollywood, Florida in September, 2000. I remember watching Randy when he was on WGN-9. I informed my 23 year old daughter of Randy's passing and she said that when she was little that she remembers me turning on the TV every morning and hearing Randy's voice on the TV. I was shocked to hear of his death while watching WGN-9 news Saturday night. Randy was a talented news anchor. My condolences and sympathy go out to his wife and children and his friends. I can't imagine the heartache that his friend feels since the second grade.
Sincerely,
Cristina Krzeminski

Ever since our TV came with a program feature to wake us up in the morning, we have been awakened by Randy every weekday morning at 7am. His warmth and kindness seemed effortless and his sense of humor was a genuinely nice way to wake up in the morning. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Roseanne, everybody at CBS and of course his family, wife, and children. He will be greatly missed.
Respectfully,
Dan & Mary Lou Kratochwill, Glenview, IL

Randy was the best at what he did. I loved to hear him laugh and see his smile, I'll miss that in the a.m. Rest well Randy, knowing you have done your job well. God Bless.
--Jacqui

I was in Mexico 3 years ago with a large group of people and we were all in the adult pool with a swim up bar. We noticed a man in the pool, right next to the bar, that looked very important and was talking on his cell phone A LOT. One of the people I was with suggested he thought the man was Randy Salerno so they dared me to go and ask him. I waded over to him and said "by any chance are you Randy Salerno?" and he responded with "well as a matter of fact I am." The friends that were with him laughed and rolled their eyes, as if they had heard this question of a number of times before. He was incredibly polite and we talked for several minutes after that. I just wanted to share my encounter and express my condolences to the CBS news team as well as the Salerno family. He will be greatly missed.
--Jen K., Valpo, IN

I looked forward every morning to see the CBS News team while drinking my coffee before I had to get the morning started.

I could always count on a smile or a laugh or two while catching up on the news.

My heart goes out to all of Randy Salerno's family and friends for their sudden and devastating loss. It is indescribable; I know because I lost my youngest son last April at the age of 19. I miss him everyday, and the tears fall often. I can also say that when I remember my son, I always can smile through the tears, because he is in my heart forever. Randy will be in all your hearts forever as well, and one day you will meet again. God Bless you all.
--Julie

Randy's absence couldn't have been more poignant than when you showed his empty chair when this morning's broadcast began at 5 AM. My last memory of him was from one day last week, when you had reported on Dave Letterman messing up John Edward's hair. In the closing moment of that newscast, Susan & Rosanne could be seen messing up Randy's hair. It was typical of their camaraderie! Randy's amazing charm, warmth and wit will be missed by countless people. My heart and prayers go out to his family, co-workers and friends.
--Sandy Woodring

I just want to say how sorry I am for all of you at CBS as well as his wife and children. I feel like I lost a great friend as well. It was very hard to turn on the TV this morning and know that Randy would not be there to greet me with his charm and wittiness. I will really miss him dearly. He was a part of my family as well. Randy will always be in our hearts and will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace.
--Randi Bankendorf

In this time of great sorrow and loss for the Salerno family and CBS 2 family , I just wanted to commend the morning show for returning to work this Monday morning , knowing it would not be easy. Nothing comforts those in grieving more than being in the company of family and friends. It really was great to be able to laugh and occasionally cry and remember Randy who will be so greatly missed. My heart goes out to his family, his children, co-workers and all who loved him.
--Jen

I just wanted to write in to express my deep condolences to the loss of Randy Salerno. I am from Albany, NY where Randy appeared as weekend anchor of WNYT -13. Way back then he had this incredible presence on the camera, which is probably what got him some attention. When I heard that he had been hired at WGN, I remembered thinking that it was good that his career was taking off, and when he'd appear on WGN, which we get here if you have the right setup, I thought it was awesome that I "knew" a face on a big channel like that, but clearly, all of Chicago knew him much better than here in Albany, and I am glad he got a chance to shine on CBS-2. What a tragic loss, my heart goes out to all of you that worked with him and his family.
--Justin Williams

My husband and I live in Kentland, Indiana and we wake up with the CBS2Chicago news team every morning. How shocked we were to hear about Randy! We both have said we didn't realize just how much all of you have become a part of our family. Our family sends our thoughts and prayers to Randy's wife and children, and to all of you, his extended family at CBS. We will miss Randy very much.
--Ed and Gloria Hofmeyer

I was very sadden by the news of Randy Salerno. I remember watching him on WGN with Roseanne and it's just like loosing a family member especially when you wake up every morning watching the news they all become a part of your family at some point. My condolences goes out to the family of Randy Salerno both immediate family and extended family of WGN and CBS. I'm sure he touched a lot of hearts and he will always be remembered.
--Charmaine Harmon

I can't explain how sad I was to hear about Randy. I always watched the morning news at 5:00 until my hours were changed at work. I remember his first day and I wondered how well he would do because he seemed so shy. He became someone that you would look forward to see in the morning because he was fun but serious about his work. The funny thing is that just about a week ago I decided to get up early on my day off just so I could watch the news because I missed seeing the morning group. My daughter asked why I would get up when I didn't have to and I told her that I wasn't sure but I missed seeing those guys. Randy died on my birthday. I will miss him and his voice. My condolences to his family at home as well as the family he became a part of at CBS.
--Mona Alessi

My mornings won't be the same for a very long time without Randy to help me get started during the wk. Last wk I was
watching the news and some lady called and asked Randy if he was leaving and he didn't know anything about him leaving. The viewer said "she heard that somewhere".. I'll miss you Randy, but God has gained another Angel...
I just want his family to remember that...
--Fran Bowie

I was saddened to hear about the death of Randy. My condolences to his family and friends and also everyone at cbs news .He was a great guy to watch and very funny . To bad life deals this way.
-Carla Bies

I have watched Randy from the time he was on channel 9 with Roseann and he will be missed.
--Kathy L

I moved to Chicago 3 1/2 years ago and have watched Channel 2 news every morning since I've been here. Randy and his team were a great joy to watch before I left for work. He seemed like a wonderful person and I'm sure he'll be greatly missed by all. My most sincere sympathy to his family and friends.
--Luanne Luck

When Randy and Roseanne left WGN a few years ago for CBS, I followed. The chemistry these two shared was tough to find anywhere on the tv or radio. Roseanne, I can only imagine how hard this is for you. You worked with him for 16 years and refer to Randy as your brother. The clips that have been shown always come back to the two of you laughing. You can see how much he meant to you and how much you meant to him. Last summer, I had the pleasure of finding Randy reporting the news on the air with Garry Meier. Randy's wit, sarcasm, and observations were a great fit on the radio. The stories that have been told over the last few days have painted a picture of someone who was a caring, thoughtful person who knew how to prioritize what matters in life. Work is always there, but family and friends are what matters the most. Anyway, I just wanted to say to Randy's family, friends, and co-workers, you are in our thoughts and prayers.
--Brian

I was so shocked and saddened by the news of Randy Salerno's passing. Like so many others, I started each morning listening to him, his wonderful wit and talent made the day for me. My heart goes out to his morning team friends, and his family. He will be so sorely missed.
--Kathy, Streamwood

I was truly and utterly shocked when I heard the news on the radio Friday morning about Randy's accident. I was on my way to work and I just thought that it couldn't be happening. What do you mean an accident?? The tears began to well up and I thought "I didn't know him personally so why am I crying". But then I realized that he has been in my life for over 10 years. I see him more regularly then some of my family members. I first saw him on WGN and then moved with him to CBS. I followed Randy and Roseanne because they are truly a team and a class act. I will miss him greatly. My deepest, deepest condolences go out to his wife, children, his extended family, Roseanne, Susan, Ed and the entire CBS station.
--Sabrina Persin, Westville, Indiana

It was with shock I read of Randy's accident and passing in Saturday's Tribune. I had been gone last week on business, didn't know until then.

Randy was the nucleus of the morning news. Because of Randy and Roseanne and Ed and Susan, we have been devoted viewers each weekday morning for several years. Yes, his wit, yes his obvious zeal for life just made the news fun to watch. I always enjoyed having a laugh that early in the morning. My favorite memory was he introduced himself as Roseanne. That and when he was with the Sox in Houston in 05.

And it was obvious that all four of them were close friends, enjoyed each other. Truly professional, never arrogant, the news was and always will be accurate on WBBM...that includes the weather and traffic reports.

I watched part of Monday's broadcast. To Susan and Roseanne and Ed....your composure, while sadness was still in your eyes, was admirable.

My wife and I will mourn his passing just like he was a personal friend. Our sympathies to his family, and CBS2 colleagues.
--Bruce Drake

I was very sad to hear about Randy, when my husband woke me up before leaving for work to tell me that my favorite afternoon news anchor has passed I just could not believe it...watching Randy & Roseanne was like watching my other favorites Matt Lauer & Katie Couric they made watching the news fun.... My favorite moments of Randy was when he was reporting from Florida for the Superbowl I just could not wait to see what kind of humorous tactics he was going to come up with, I would set the recorder even when I could not be home to watch him...he really seemed like a fun and wonderful person to be around.
My Heart goes out to his Family & Friends...Randy definitely has earned his wings...God Bless
Sincerely,
Maria Peluso

We were unfortunate not to know Randy personally. However, we watched CBS2 morning news every morning. The rapport the team had & Randy's interaction with them has always brought a smile to our faces. We will miss that daily fix. We'd just like to send our sympathy to his co-workers and especially to his family. You are all in our thoughts!
--The Fairbairn Family

--Renee Gee, Westmont

When I've moved to Marion, Illinois away from Chicago after getting married I missing watching Chicago news. Seeing him on news would make me feels as if I'm near my old home after I found WGN channel on Mediacom cable. I always look forward watching him on news every morning and noon. I'm shocked upon hearing the passing of Randy Salerno. My heart goes out to the family of Randy Salerno and his friends from his news networks. He will always be remembered. My prayer is with his families and his friends. Hugs
--Vivi Bitsiaras-Hardy, Marion, IL.

We now have an angel watching over us; although I did not know him personally, I do know he was a great person, a great co-worker, great son, great father, husband and friend. God Bless his family and friends – may his memories comfort you and God protect us all.
--Angelica Lopez

I'm so sorry for this loss we all share. I am proud of the Morning Crew and the way you are holding up on the air today. You are going to have to be strong on the show for more than today and I pray for you, strength to go on with all the humor and enthusiasm you may be afraid you don't have in you right now. We are all behind you.
You Are Loved,
--Jillian Heneks

Even though his spirit is no longer with us, his legacy will live on in his family, at work and at home. He lived his life well. He touched each of his co-workers and lived a well-rounded life. He lived his dream job and that will encourage others to chase after their dream too. For it's in living you find a little bit of who you meet that makes you the person you are today. Randy will be that person that will touch all of us that knew him, whether personally or just as our news anchorman we watched every day that made us laugh. When someone dies you hope to take a little bit of what that person meant to you and transform your life for the better so that one day someone can learn from you. I am touched by all the sentiments that are coming from a well-loved and dear man and even though I never met him, I feel like I know a little bit more about living life in a positive way through the eyes of others. May his legacy of how he lived life touch us all in a positive way.
--Debby Adler,Island Lake, IL

I've watched you all for 4 years ( Randy, Susan, Ed and Kris) as I wake up each morning, and I'm so devastated over the passing of Randy. Randy was my favorite and he was at his best with Roseanne, Ed and Susan. I am heartbroken and I will miss him so very much. He had a sense of humor that would make you laugh before he even said anything because you knew it would be something cleaver. My heart and sympathy goes out to his wife Irene and his 3 dear children. Roseanne, Ed, Susan hang in there and God Bless.
--bobbie j. jones

I started watching the channel 2 news crew because of their obvious friendship and bond. I will greatly miss Randy and his great but gentle sense of humor. Randy was the Ringmaster and his coworkers were the entertainers. I want to send his family my deepest sympathy in this sad time. Channel 2 has lost one of their best.
--Jean M. Camerier

I was shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of Randy Salerno. I remember watching him on WGN but I did not get a chance to see him on CBS. He and Roseanne made a great team. He was very enjoyable to watch. He took his job seriously but yet he could make us laugh also. What a great sense of humor! He will be sorely missed. My deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends and television family. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. May he rest in peace.
--TM of Wheeling

I watched your newscast this morning...and couldn't help but cry...for you his coworkers and friends, for his beautiful dear family, for all of us who will miss him. He touched so many lives. You did an incredible job maintaining your composure...I sure didn't. Our thoughts are with you all during this difficult time.
--Diana

I actually changed stations for morning news after Roseanne and Randy left Channel 9 for Channel 2. Your website's dedication to Randy had me tearing up, my prayers are with Randy's family, and to the kind staff at Channel 2. Big hugs to Roseanne and Susan and a high five to Ed. Hopefully they will leave the website dedication up longer as I have to go to work and would like to relive some more fun memories of Randy.
--God Bless you all! Vito C, Chicago

I watch the morning program every workday starting at 5:30 AM. I send my condolences to his beautiful wife and children and parents. I also want to say how strong his co-workers have been through this. We know how very difficult it must be for all of you since it is difficult on the regular everyday viewers. He added a lot to the program and he will be sorely missed.
--Susan Delaney

I am very sorry to hear about Randy Salerno, my sympathy goes out to his family and all his friends. I feel like I know Mr. Salerno and he knew me. Every morning I woke up with him. From the Channel 9 morning news I followed him and Roseanne to Channel 2 morning news. Laughed with every funny stunt he did and cried with the memories of him on today's broadcast. He will be truly missed.
--Barbara Bartalone

I have never met any of you personally, but you are all my morning family. The alarm goes off, the TV goes on and you are there to comfort me if the new is bad, make me laugh when I need to laugh. I can't imagine how hard it had to be for you to do the show this morning, may you all have the strength to get through this most difficult of times. The angels surely have a great man to talk to now.
--Nancy

My heart feels heavy for all his family, friends, and coworkers especially Roseanne. Cried like a baby when I saw the empty chair this morning on the show and the other day when his office was shown. I saw Randy one day Christmas shopping on Michigan avenue he just smiled a great smile. I did not realize how tall he was and just as good looking. He will be greatly missed and many of God's blessings to all.
--Josie Soto

I am so very saddened to hear about Randy Salerno. I wake up to the 5 am news with Channel 2 every weekday!! I so enjoy the antics of all of you. I will miss him and the character that he was. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and all of you at Channel 2. I am especially sad for his children, I was 9 years old when my dad passed away so I know what those kids are going through. God is with each and everyone of you and will get you through this very sad time. Your faith will see you though. I also am praying for his dear friend who will have to live with this the rest of his life. Take care all of you, family and friends. God Bless!!
--Lois, Alsip

I lost my handsome and very funny brother in 2003, about Randy's age. Not long after that, a new team came to my favorite morning news. Something caught my attention at the kitchen counter. Surrounded by class act colleagues, it was Randy, whose humor and razor-sharp wit mesmerized me. How you all filled my kitchen with bittersweet emotions! I really understand this tragic loss for you and Randy's family. Fond memories and time will help….P.S. I will be tuned in thinking of you all, Roseanne, Susan, Ed Kris and Bill. Support each other. Life and work go on down here. I suspect Randy will be watching and adding his two cents anyway.
--Michel

I am quite surprised by the way I have been touched by Randy. Just by seeing him on television. I have cried and cried. He was such a wonderful human being. And I never even met him. That sure is saying something about a person. My sympathy to his family and his TV family. And to his childhood friend I wish him well.
--Regards, Susan Parisi

My husband and I spent manay mornings with Randy and Roseanne being the first voices we heard. Many times he was up with my family as the guys went to hunt or fish always a secure tone and a trustworthy voice we admired. We can appreciate is love of the outdoors and the many pleasures the seasons bring, how tragic a loss for many peolples who's lives he truly touched. He will be missed and mourned by all. My Heart is so broken, seeing that empty space , I could imagine how Ms. Tellez must feel coming to work and her partner is no longer with her. I have tears that won't stop coming down my cheaks. I have been praying for his family, wife and children, his Family at CBS. If this pain I have is so hard, I can imagine the pain the family must be enduring. Randy left us too soon, so young and full of life, I wish you were still with us!! But you will always remain in our hearts, never will be forgotten. You were such a wonderful person to watch, you use to make my mornings so bright no matter how bad the weather was out there. Gosh!! It is so hard not to see you with Ms. Tellez. Thank you Randy for all the joy that you have brought us thru out the years.God Bless Your Family. You are our Angel Now.
--G.P

My heart and prayers go to the Salerno Family and his CBS Family. I really enjoyed waking up and turning on the TV to Channel 2. The news was professional and also uplifting to start my stressful commute and long day. I will truly miss him and know that his hand will be on his families and their life together forever. He is now with the Lord and another Angel watching over us. Thank you Randy Salerno and his family for sharing your most precious jewel with all of Chicago.
--Chris Harper, Palatine

It's been like a routine; alarm clock going off at 5 a.m.; turn the TV on to Channel 2 News and always hearing Randy's voice in the background while trying to wake up. On Friday, both my husband and I noticed he wasn't on to do his normal duty. Our hearts sank when we heard the news as we watched the news cover over the weekend. It is still hard to imagine that he will not be able to wake us up in the morning. As everyone else commented; he was at the top of his game and kept the humor going but also knew when to incorporate his serious side into play; a true professional. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his immediate family and to the CBS 2 family through this period.
--Chris M. Rowe

I never met Randy but I watched him every morning.  When he passed away it was like a member of my family. I am devasted
--Bernie

My husband and I are very sad about the untimely passing of Randy Salerno. He, along with Susan, Roseanne, Ed, Bill Z.and Chris H., have been a part of our home every weekday starting at 5:00 am. While we get ready to greet the day, Randy would help put a realistic and humorous spin on the daily news, and we thoroughly enjoyed his wit and genuine presence. It is truly a loss for us, that will be felt for a long time to come.
--Nora and Bob Kane, Barrington

I loved watching him on the news, he was funny and loving. He reached out to so many people in different ways and it makes me very sad to know that he is gone. If there was really a God then why did he have to take Randy away from his loving wife and two beautiful children... Our hearts go out to his family. I would also like to say that his best friend that was driving should not be charged for his death. As any normal person could see that Randy and his friend made that choice to get on the snowmobile after leaving the bar. Nobody forced them to ride together, it was their choice and they both made the mistake of doing so. Now who's suffering for it? Randy's loving wife, children and family. The state of Wisconsin is so screwed up, they know that thousands each year come there to go snowmobiling and they drink at the bars along the paths and then continue on. Did the law enforcement agencies out there bother to do anything before this tragic accident? "NO" It took a life of a public figure from Chicago to get them off their behinds. Wisconsin could have prevented this and they failed, so now they need to use Randy's best friend as an escape goat and blame him because they didn't do what they should have done years ago. If anyone is to blame it's the State of Wisconsin for failing to enforce the laws along with the bar that allowed them to leave on a one person snowmobile. If that happened here in Illinois, the bar owner would be in trouble so why shouldn't that establishment be held accountable. These businesses should be required to have a person watching the customers coming and going, this would help prevent future accidents.
--Sincerely, Bob White, Round Lake Park

Roseanne and Susan,

Thank you so much for sharing some special moments with TV news clips of your colleague Randy Salerno. I love watching your news show each morning and am saddened that he will no longer be a part of your team. His sense of humor, professionalism and love for his TV family, as well as his personal family, is an inspiration for all of us and he will be greatly missed. He has left a legacy that will be difficult, if not impossible, to fill but I hope you can all move ahead knowing how much he loved all of you. May he rest in peace.
--Madeline

As I watched the coverage today on Randy Salerno.......it's like...... am I really watching this about Randy? It just makes me sick that this has happened. My husband and I watch every morning and I so looked forward to the morning news especially when the whole team was there and no one was on vacation. It was very fitting that Randy's chair was empty when the news started this morning. There is no way it can be filled especially at this time. I was also comforted by seeing all the regulars, Roseanne, Susan and Ed, there this morning although I'm sure it was very hard for them. Our sympathies go out to the CBS 2 News Team and his family. We feel that he was someone we actually knew and are grieving right along with you. God Bless You.
--Jane

I am so proud of the morning team's strength through the 1st mornings new cast without Randy. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been for Roseanne, Susan and Ed. Thank you all so much for being there for all of us, because the viewers really needed you this morning. Your tribute was warm and touched my heart. We all miss him so much.
--Lisa Viteri, Algonquin

I wake up early every morning and listen to the 5am broadcast. It is a great way to start the day. Randy Salerno is already missed so much. I really sympathize with his family and his TV colleagues. Losses are hard to bear. The positive way he spoke and acted is what I remember and have appreciated. His personal enthusiasm showed during each newscast and was a marvelous asset.
--Sincerely, Julie Ernst, Skokie

I wish I had the words…I didn't know Randy personally; I can't even say I was a daily viewer. But before I changed my work hours I would watch him everyday with Roseanne on WGN. I'm not sure why I'm writing, except that this man, Randy, could touch people. He personified human kindness, which I feel is a very special quality to possess. For some reason, which I, personally, can't even explain,I feel an overwhelming sense of obligation to, at the very least, send my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to both his immediate family and friends and to all of you, his extended and very much loved news family. I'm so sorry for the sadness and loss that you all are feeling. May God keep you safe and comfort you in your time of sorrow.
--Debbi

What a tragedy, I woke up every morning, he always made me laugh even on the days when I did not want to go to work. My prayers are with Randy's family. What a loss to CBS and to our community. Randy you will be missed.
--DeLois Terrell

On behalf of my family, we want to extend our thoughts and prayers to Randy's family and colleagues at Channel 2. We live in the Rosemoor Community on the South Side of Chicago and regard Randy, Roseanne, Susan, Ed, and Bill as members of our extended family. We have appreciated Randy's warmth and sense of humor and enjoyed the connection you've made with us as viewers. You have taken the news seriously, but we appreciate the fact that you don't always take yourselves all that seriously and have made a refreshing difference in our mornings. We got introduced to Randy and Roseanne at WGN and were thrilled when you joined WBBM-TV and have followed you ever since. It is with sadness and joy that we are following the coverage of Randy's career and just wanted you to know that we are thinking about you and appreciate the thoughtfulness and appreciation you have extended to us, your viewing audience.
--Porter W. Myrick Jr. and Family

I was in shock this morning ...I just couldn't believe it...My prayers go out to his Wife, kids and extended family...I will never forget the morning he said " good morning my name is Roseanne Tellez" , it was just too funny...God Bless him and his family.
--Maria E Padilla, Palatine

I woke up with this good looking man with an incredible sense of humor every morning! We were all so fortunate to have had such an individual in all of our lives! He will live on in all of us….
--Suzanne Kotomski

Our family will miss seeing Randy every week day am. We followed him & Rosanne to Channel 2 after watching them both on WGN. Our hearts go out to all of the members of the Salerno family & friends, for this is certainly tragic. But also rings true from one of Jimmy Buffetts lyrics, "I'd rather die while I'm living then live while I'm dead". In Randy's case, both ring true, his spirit lives on and he lived his life to the fullest. What always impressed me was his down to earthiness. That is what made him so likeable. He seemed like a person that liked everyone, and that is what I will remember most about Randy.
--Namaste, The White Family

I never had the pleasure of meeting Randy in person but, I felt as if I knew him as I too live in neighboring McHenry. I watched him every morning. He was a joy to see everyday on my t.v. screen. Even my children loved to watch. He will be greatly missed by all. My heart goes out to his family and his TV family as well. Be strong.

I just had a baby October 13th, and started watching Channel 2 during my 5am morning feedings with my daughter!! I would just turn the TV on for light in our bedroom, and much to my surprise I loved watching the news due to Randy, and Roseanne's beautiful connection!! No one took themselves too seriously, and reported the important events with either a smile, joke, or sorrow… your feelings were so real that changing my news station was an easy choice!!! With this morning's news, was apparent how hard it was for the entire staff, however, you all continued to do as Randy expected…..you pushed thru~!!! Roseanne, your courage is enlightening. My sincere sympathy to you all, push on, Randy's watching!!

I met Randy about two years ago. I was at Best Buy in Crystal Lake and was looking at a gadget. Randy came up to me and asked me what I thought about what I was looking at and I said, I wasn't sure, but that it looked cool and that was enough for me to buy it. He laughed and agreed. We got to talking and ended up on the talking about the Cubs and we spoke for another 15 minutes about their upcoming season. Anyway, at the end of the conversation, I told him it was nice speaking to him and that I enjoyed his work. At that point, he said he was headed over to the local hot dog place and if I wanted, he would enjoy the company. We must have spent an hour and half talking Cubs, family and golf courses, that to me was who Randy was, just a good down to earth guy. Saw him in town from time to time and he was as nice as he was the first time I met him, I will truly miss Randy, he was one of a kind.
--Van Swanson

My thoughts and prayers go out to Randy's family and his Channel 2 News family. I was so sad to hear of his untimely passing. He was a bright, fun-loving, down-to-earth and genuine guy who started my day on such a positive note. The chemistry he added to the whole team was so noticeable. I cannot even imagine how difficult it was for the team to go on without him this morning. I know you will continue to provide the quality morning show you have always given us and that his legacy will live on. We will all miss him so very much. May the heartbreak his family is feeling be lessened by the outpouring of love from all who knew him.
--Susan from Twin Lakes, Wis.

I didn't know Randy, I knew his mother and Aunt. My hearts go out to his sife and kids and to his mom and his family. It's kind of weird that I won't hear "I am Randy Salerno" at the closing of the show. I remember when Randy went to Parrot Island for the Colts and Bears game. For Randy Salerno and his family. All I can say is go Bears. My condolences, to the Salerno Family. Randy will be Sadly missed in this household. --Dawn Edwards

When someone so talented, and so young is tragically taken away, well, It seems to say there is something better on the other side of life. My sympathy to Randy's family and the CBS 2 family. He leaves us all with an empty place in our hearts.
--A Crown Point Viewer

It saddened me to hear of the death of Randy. My very heart felt sympathies go out to all of Randy's family and friends. I have enjoyed all he brought to Channel 2 and knew he was a great partner to Ed, Susan and Roseanne. I also believe that God had a very special plan for Randy and needed him more than anyone else. Right now that is hard to believe but God always has a reason for what he does and even though we do not know the reason our faith will heal all wounds and bring us peace and good memories and a lot of love for Randy. Peace be with you.

I watch you guys every single morning before work from 5:30 to 7 a.m., and I still can't believe it. I've watched Randy & Roseanne since they were on Channel 9 together, and even after Roseanne left Ch.9, I continued watching because of Randy Salerno. Anyway, I was off from work last Friday (ironically, to attend my cousin's funeral). I am not a morning person, and even though I didn't need to get up at my usual time (5:30 a.m.) that day, I always like to start my day with Randy & Roseanne. So, as usual, I turned to Channel 2 for the morning news, and instead of Randy, I heard Vince's voice. My first thought was: Darn!!! - Randy must be on vacation today; I was kind of disappointed but continued watching anyway. At about 6:55 a.m. Vince broke the sad news about Randy, and I thought ... what?!---what!!!???---WHAT did he say???? Did he say Randy DIED?????? I was frantic!!! I thought (hoped) that maybe I was hearing things and/or just not fully awake or something ... so I turned quickly to Channel 9 because I knew if what I thought I heard was even remotely true that Ch.9 would report it because he'd worked there for so long before coming to Ch.2. Needless to say, I was in total shock when I heard the news on Ch. 9, and I'm still in shock. I mean, I just saw him on Thursday morning's newscast. Randy was like a co-worker or a friend that I look forward to seeing every day ... and now that person is gone. Honestly---I am a complete newshound, and I've seen ALL the morning news shows in Chicago ... and there is no one else I'd rather watch to help me get my day started besides Randy Salerno---not another personality & not on any other channel. Randy was fun & funny, witty & sarcastic, intelligent & adventurous, yet goofy and was always willing to try things or even make a complete fool of himself --- and he was VERY easy on the eyes, too!!! As I write this, I still can't believe that someone so young & vibrant is gone. I feel SO sorry for all his family in Crystal Lake, as well as his co-workers at Ch. 2 and Ch. 9, and my heart goes out to you all. I can only imagine what you're all feeling and going through. The tribute to Randy today was really nice, and it was really sad, too. I, for one, will truly miss Randy Salerno. I never met him, but he was a part of my life most of the week.
--Janice Rockett

While watching the remembrances of Randy, I just had to send a note. I watched, as everyone, every morning, and felt like a friend. I was shocked when I heard you remembering him on Friday. I just sat a cried. My heart, and prayers go out to his TV family and his wife and young children. I'm sure, as one other fan wrote, Randy would want us not to be sad, but go on and enjoy our life. Take care.
--Paige DiCristofano

Watched you from Channel 9 to Channel 2. I am sorry about your accident. God bless your family through these hard times. Just a constant watcher.
--Sincerely, Vera Townsend

I grew up in Crystal Lake and was two years behind Randy in school. I went to C.L. Central H.S. and remember him playing basketball at the beach during the summers and in school against our H.S. I later worked with him when we both worked for the City of Crystal Lake during the summers of our college years. Randy was a great guy and always had everyone laughing all the time. I was always glad to be in his crew because I knew I would be laughing most of the day. Many of his comments were about a character "Johnny Vegas". He was kind, caring and a very enjoyable gentleman to be around.

We are saddened by the loss of Randy Salerno. Mornings will never be the same in our home. Every morning we started our day with Randy, Roseanne, Susan, Ed and Bill. Watching Randy interact with his co-workers, one could see the friendships and mutual respect that they all had for one another. Randy's quick wit and sense of humor was something to always watch for. Randy was a gem. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Salerno family, the CBS family and friends. Randy may no longer be with us but he will always be in our thoughts. We have lost a remarkable man and heaven has gained an amazing angel.
--With Deepest Sympathy, Carol Koshmider and Family

To Roseanne, Ed, Susan, Bill, Kris and the CBS staff,

You all have made my mornings so much brighter since I began
watching 3 years ago. Randy's humble personality, quick quips, and playful banter showed me that you all weren't just another news crew, but a family. Even though you don't get to see us (your audience), as much as we see you. We will all be here together to move past these hard times. Randy, thanks for all the laughs. You will be missed.
--Dan, Chicago

My husband and I have been watching Randy Salerno for a number of years, and can't tell you how watching him each morning made my day! I loved his humor! You could tell he loved his job, as well as his co-workers. He must have loved going to work every day! Our condolences go out to Randy's family, especially his CBS 2 family! He will be missed terribly!
--Carol, Willowbrook

My husband and I offer our sincere condolences to Randy's family and to Randy's work family. Our hearts are truly broken and we feel a huge void. We begin each workday with the CBS team Randy, Rosanne, Susan and Ed @ 5:00am. Randy, we truly miss you!
--Kathy & Dave Leipert

Every morning I wake up and My heart breaks remembering that Randy won't be there, for all of us. My days started out with a smile with the morning team. I wish everyone a warm hug and hope you think like Randy would have, during this difficult time. He had such a calming, fun way about himself.
--Amy Keller

He started hundreds of mornings for me, silly as it sounds sometimes I would think if he could make it to work certainly I could. What a tragedy for his wife and children my heartfelt sympathies.
--Regards, Irene Stephens

My heart goes out to the family, coworkers and all of us many viewers who feel like we have lost a dear friend. It was so good to wake up in the morning and turn CBS 2 on and see that beautiful smiling face of his. He was such a great person, his personality shown through his smile. I give all of his coworkers this morning a great big hug for going on when I know it has to be so hard to continue without him. May God comfort all of his family, coworkers and friends at this most sorrowful time. He will be missed so much!! Heaven has a new wonderful angel up there. God Bless all of us as we try and go on without such a great man.
--Betty Szala

My fondest memory of Randy was back in September, 2005 when CBS did the promo with Dr. Phil at the Northwestern Train Station. In fact, I have a picture of Randy and Dr. Phil (with me in the background laughing). I attended the function with Nancy Farley who introduced me to Randy. I was so impressed by his down to earth attitude and warm welcoming smile; I sent an email thanking him for taking the time to chat with me for a few minutes and he apologized for not being able to spend more time talking (I can remember saying to myself at that time - wow Randy is apologizing to me for not spending more time talking to ME...); he had a way of making you feel special. This is what I loved most about him; he always took the time to recognize everyone. Randy had a way of enjoying life and that showed through each and every day. I found myself getting up earlier than I needed to just to see what was going to happen that day on the morning show. Although my heart is heavy (just as many are), I am truly going to miss Randy. My heart and prayers go out to the Salerno family and the CBS 2 morning show. We have all lost a wonderful friend, but know that he will remain in the hearts of many. Good bye Randy I will miss you deeply!
--May God Bless all of you, Cathie Cholke

I am so sad. I watched him every morning and feel like I knew him. I will miss you Randy. My deepest sympathies to all that will miss you.
--Nancy

I just wanted to say how truly sorry I am to hear about Randy. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Today, Monday 1/28, was hard to watch and I could see how upset everyone was and it brought tears to my eyes. Randy is in a much better place now and is looking down on everyone and smiling and maybe cracking a joke or two. He made me laugh every morning with his comments and his witted personality. Again I am sorry for his loss and God Bless!!!
--Kim, Naperville

Both Roy and I watch your morning show and love it. It makes us laugh and really gets us going in the am. We will really miss Randy and his humor each day. I feel as if I have lost a good friend. My condolences to you all at CBS, and to his wife and children.
--Margie and Roy Hostert

While I did not know Randy Salerno personally, my mother & I feel as if we lost a family member; this was just like losing my brother all over again, even though he passed away over a year ago. The pain is always with us. One of the most heartwrenching things is they both were young with promising futures; the most painful realization that comes with death is that we will never see them again. I was touched this morning by the kindness, respect, & honor extended to Randy by the CBS family; Roseanne, Susan, Ed, & Kris. Never have I seen such love & closeness in a business setting. The CBS family is my extended family, & we all feel the heartache, loss, & pain of Randy's passing on different levels. I extend my condolences to the Salerno family & the CBS family; may you all one day come to peace with Randy's passing, & have Randy's wit & humor sustain your pain through the coming years. Randy is now our "Guardian Angel" watching over us. Take care & may God be with you.
--Regards, Faustina Beninato

I whas sad to hear of Randy passing. My prayers and thoughts go out to his family and co-workers.
--Sincerely, Brian
