Viewers' Comments On Randy Salerno - Part 4

Send Us Your Memories Of Randy

Viewers share their thoughts and memories of CBS 2 Morning anchor Randy Salerno, who passed away in a snowmobiling accident late Thursday night.

What a sad and preventable thing to have happened to this great guy.......his family and friends.......Chicagoland viewers......and, also,
sadly, his friend who was driving the snowmobile....another life forever changed. This is a fun sport, but while seeming innocuous, can be
very dangerous......Randy has left us, but not without a lesson learned....his final gift.... -- Stephanie Radez, Wayne, Ill.

As I have written in the past, I am an avid CBS 2 Morning News fan. I watch Randy and Roseanne (the best anchor team) along with Ed and Susan from 5a to 7a every morning. Randy and Roseanne are hilarious (I used to watch them on Channel 9 but didn't like 9 and switched to 2 ... imagine my surprise and pleasure when they both came over to 2). When Vince came on this morning and broke the news with tears in his eyes and trying to stay composed, I yelled out "Oh No" several times and started crying. This is and will be very disturbing for a long time. I had the sincere pleasure of meeting Randy at an Aids benefit and he was a very gracious, personable person. The way Randy talked about his children and wife I cannot even imagine how they will live without him; what a loving family. My heartfelt sympathy to them and to Roseanne, Ed and Susan, as well as the entire Channel 2 family. It is an understatement to say what a great loss this is to Chicago, his family, his friends, anyone.
-- Robin Schapiro

have watched Channel 2 since I was in grade school., coming home at lunch time and viewing the Lee Phillip Show and the news with Bill Kurtis. My home was close to the school which was Rogers. Watching these talented people brightened my day.

During the last five and a half months, I am frequently home mid-days once again. I was unfairly terminated from my job. I am going through some most difficult times. Watching shows such as The Price Is Right and Randy, Rosanne, Ed and Susan on the 11:00 News has brightened many of my days once again. I am shocked and saddened to hear of the passing away of Randy Salerno. He was a superior newscaster and will be greatly missed.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Randy Salerno and the entire Channel 2 Staff.
-- Ron Turbin

What a nice man. He was so bright, and funny. I'm so sad for his family and for his CBS family. He seemed like a very nice person, someone you'd like to know.
-- Judith Loevy

am so truly sorry to hear of Randy's untimely death.

He seemed like such a nice man to all of us who knew him only on the TV screen, but after hearing all the nice tributes to him today I realize our perception of him was right on.

I will always smile when I think of the time he introduced himself as Roseanne Tellez.
He and the whole crew and television audience shared a good laugh that day.
My condolences to his family and to his friends.
Kind Regards. --Mary Beth Lehman

I was so shocked and saddened to hear this news about Randy Salerno. I feel like he was my brother and I am mourning with my family right now. We love the morning news with Randy, Roseanne, Ed and Susan. Randy was always the center point with his quick wit and he just made your morning. I loved the video's he found on line. He always had such a hilarious comment to make. He will be greatly missed by everyone. Randy, right now, is probably telling us to stop feeling so bad and would be handing out a witty comment to us. My sincere sympathies to Channel 2 and to Randy's family. We lost a great guy. -- Sue Shedd, Glendale Heights

I still can't get it into my head yet. This morning while I was watching the show and getting ready for work I just could not believe when they said what had happened.

I started watching the show almost 2 years ago because I got sick of the same old boring stuff on the other channels. I had heard about the morning show so I decided to check it ou. I think I watched it for like five minutes and was hooked. Randy just always had something about him that drew you in and kept your attention. I always loved his sense of hummer and the way he always seemed to care about what he was saying.
-- Dave Neumann

I watched Randy & Roseanne on WGN for years, I was so upset when I heard he was leaving WGN blew it big time with letting him go. God bless his family.

My prayers go out to his family and friends and everyone that worked with him. -- Cathy Burger

My husband and I would like to extend our sympathy to Randy's family and the rest of the CBS 2 news cast. We recently moved to the area and immediately enjoyed watching Randy and Roseanne in the mornings. He always gave the news with joy and enthusiasm and brought lots of laughter to our home. He will be greatly missed.
-- The McAdow Family, Rensselaer, Ind.

I have never been the type who liked to watch the news because it is always so depressing. With Randy (and the CBS2 Morning News Team), I have never enjoyed watching the news so much. Despite negative news being reported, they all made it a little easier to swallow. You felt like you were part of their family. Randy was always good for a quick quip that would leave you laughing the rest of the day. One quick, witty comment from Randy each morning was all you needed to send you off for the day. I think what made him so funny, is the fact that he would make a funny remark when you least expected it. He will be sorely missed. My condolences to the CBS2 News family. -- Lorraine McDowell, Round Lake

My fondest memory of Randy is Sept. 8, 2006. My husband and I attended breakfast at the Bean in Millenium Park. I won't forget the date because it is our Wedding Aniversary. -- Nancy Darnall

I was shocked as so many others to hear the news of Randy's untimely death. I've been a loyal viewer for the past three years and enjoyed Randy's quick wit. My sincere sympathy to his family and the entire CBS news. -- Maureen S., Bristol, Wis.

No morning was complete without a cup of coffee, a cigarette, and Randy & Rosanne. He will be forever missed. -- Lori Miller, Marseilles, Ill.

I cannot express the disbelief and sadness I felt this morning when I heard the news of Randy's death. I didn't know him personally but like so many other viewers who loved his wit and dry humor I felt a strange connection to him. I feel as though I have lost a family member and he will truly be missed in our home. My sincere condolences to his family and co-workers. I imagine he was as much a joy to work with as he was to watch every day. I am so sorry. -- Beth, Arlington Heights

My condolences go out to Randy's family and friends. He always made me laugh before I left for work. I will definitely miss his sarcastic comments and wittiness in the morning. I remember one morning when the team was looking at celebrity mug shots and in true Randy form he said, " Well, it's hard to take a good mug shot........Isn't it Susan." That quick wit will be truly missed. -- Anonymous

Shocking and so very saddening. I missed this mornings news only to hear about the accident later on WGN news. I had to call my family. We all love you all in the morning, you all make us smile and Randy was a wonderful part of the chemistry you all on the morning news share. Our thoughts and prayers are with Randy's family, and with the team. The loss will be felt. -- J. Scott

It was such a delight to wake up every morning to turn on the news at 5am with Randy. Today I wake up later than normal, missed my morning dose of the show, to catch the 11am and hear of this tragic accident; my mouth dropped and my heart sank.

My prayers and heart go out to Randy, his family, friends, and co-workers. Thank you Randy for the wonderful memories you made each morning for me! -- Lette, Chicago

We moved to Southwest burbs nearly three years ago. We are from a small town where news is more low key, than stuffy. Randy and Rosanne made me feel at home while I watched their show every morning. My husband and I would just laugh at Randy. There was always something funny coming out of his mouth. And we would watch, with a smile, for his next quick comeback. I will deeply miss him as part of my daily routine. My heart aches for his wife and children. He was an amazing person, as they must know. Thank you for sharing him with us all! Many thoughts and prayers go out to you and the CBS 2 staff. -- April Armstrong

Randy Salerno could always come up with words to make a situation viable as TV news, even when things went wrong, as in some of his sports attempts and feature segments. We viewers will really miss his laughter and the joy he seemed to radiate when reporting the news and interacting with other on-camera people. -- Marilyn Gardner, Evanston

To Everyone at CBS,

I'm so deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Randy. I watch the morning news every day just to help lighten my mood before going to work. How horrible to loose part of your team to such a senseless accident.

My deepest sympathy and prayers to his family and friends.
-- Annette Hirschberg, Broadview

I wanted to share an e-mail that Randy sent us in November of 2005. The Crystal Lake South Gators were headed into the state football playoffs and Randy wore the #73 CLS jersey on air that morning. That jersey number belonged to our son Justin and was retired in 2003 after Justin died following a car accident at the age of 20. Randy was so gracious and I thought his words might bring some comfort to his own family during these next horrible days. I had emailed him my appreciation in being able to see that jersey on air and what follows is his reply:

"Cathy ... it was an honor for me to wear it. I did hear about Justin yesterday but didn't know how you would feel about me talking about that on the air. After talking to the coach it sounds like your son was a wonderful young man. I am very sorry for your loss and hope you get some comfort by the fact he is still so well thought of by those who knew him. God Bless ... the jersey is on it's way back to the school!!!"
Randy Salerno
CBS 2 Chicago

....and so to his family in Crystal Lake and to his family on CBS2... we hope you find some comfort in knowing how well Randy was thought of, both by those who knew him personally and by those of us who only knew him from our morning news. God's peace be with you all.
-- Cathy and Kevin Schroeder, Crystal Lake

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Randy's passing...much too young and too much talent to be wasted. My prayers go out to his family, the family at Channel 2 and the family at Channel 9. May the memories of Randy live long and prosper. -- Sherry, Homewood

I heard about Randy's death at work. it made me sad, he was a young guy. really funny. good looking too!
I pray for his family. I always laughed when he told those stories. he was a good reporter.
-- Donna M.

We were so shocked about Randy this morning - in total disbelief. We loved when Randy joined Channel 2 with Roseanne, Susan and Ed. His sense of humor with the team was great. He and Ed were always a riot. We feel as though we lost a member of our family. This is sooo sad. We can't imagine how the Channel 2 crew are coping.
We especially want to tell his wife and children they are in our prayers. We live in Cary so they are, in essence, neighbors of ours. Our hearts just ache for you all. We know Randy was a real family man and can't imagine your pain. May the Lord give you all strength to get through this tragedy.
-- Rick and Joan Williams - Cary

I want to send my deepest heart felt sorrow to Randy's family for there loss. I am very close friends with his brother Jeff and new Randy. It is impossible to put into words what a terrific, funny, personable person he was. GOD has picked one of the best to join him in heaven. He will truly be missed by all of Chicago. -- Scott Zimmerman

Randy will be sorely missed. I woke up with Randy for the past couple of years since moving back to the Chicago suburbs from out of state. I felt like I was watching one of my life long friends each morning. He was fair, honest, humble and had a great sense of humor. I cannot believe he is gone. God rest his soul and comfort his loved ones. -- Chuck Freeman

Like most of his early morning viewers, I didn't know Randy Salerno, but it sure felt like I did. Having moved to the Chicago area about 6 months ago, he and the morning crew had become a part of my normal morning routine. I feel like I've lost a good friend and can't even imagine how people who really knew him are feeling today. My thoughts and prayers are with those people today.
-- Dan Hagman

I, like so many, am in shock after hearing the news about Randy earlier today. My husband and I are fans of the morning show, we watch every morning. We had the opportunity to meet, talk and take pictures with Randy and Roseanne at one of the Millennium Park breakfast shows. We were talking about the city and were telling them that we lived across the street. Randy asked us a few questions about how we liked it, then turned to Roseanne and said "Roseanne you'd better get over there and check it out for us! " He was a character. Our deepest sympathy to Randy's family and to Roseanne, Ed, Susan and Bill. He will be missed by many.
-- Karen Bergstrom

I first met Randy the summer before our senior year in High School and spent a considerable amount of time with him while he was in Peoria. He was working for the ABC affiliate WHOI in about 1986 making about $14,000 a year, living in a co workers attic apartment, driving the same early 70's vintage Pontiac Ventura he was seen sporting the summer of 1980. When he was offered $19,000 to move over to the CBS affiliate (which he accepted), his now former boss told him "he was making the biggest mistake of his life. You'll never get anywhere in this business."
Our lives took divergent paths but would occasionally see him on TV when i was back visiting family. It always amazed me that the same guy you saw on TV was the same person I knew. He could make you giggle about going to the dentist. He would have been the same person if he would have chosen to be in sales or work in an office. There are people in your life that everyone gravitates toward, Randy was that person, he was at the center of wherever he was.
I will remember that night in Peoria, for as hard as we laughed at the absurdity of him now being able to afford to eat. The GM in Peoria was as bad a prognosticator as he was paying the help. Randy not only made it in his profession, the outpouring of sentiment and stories this morning shows he made it in life. Goodbye old friend you were a true original.

It was so cold and the discussion was about layering your clothes to prevent frost bite...
RANDY SAID: He put an electric heating blanket IN his pants to stay warm - but that the orange extension cord trailing out of his pants leg gave away his secret ...

Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...
It's about learning how to dance in the rain !

Mary

Can't tell you how sorry I am to hear about your loss. Watching Randy and Roseanne makes my mornings so much easier as I'm not a morning person, what a pair! I don't know how he can be replaced as there was only one Randy!

I'll keep all of you in my prayers and may God bless his family and his three little children. Peace be with him.
-- Jean Schmidt

I still really can't believe it! What a sad, sad day for Chicago. We have lost a consummate professional who had such a strong television presence yet he had this wit about him with a sly, wry sense of humor which would make you laugh. My husband knew how much I liked him, and when he told me, I felt like I'd lost a family member. I especially enjoyed watching the CBS2 morning news with him and Roseanne T. One could tell, they were very comfortable together, no dress rehearsals needed here. They just clicked, and it won't be the same. I look forward to watching the tribute.

My prayers are with his loved ones and the entire CBS2 news Family.

Sincerely,
Donna Freeman, Seneca, Ill.

Randy was a "gentle" man. I knew him from a personal story that we were involved in. Our prayers go to his family, friends and family at CBS. Randy you will be missed.

If I Should Die Before You Do
If I should die before you do, this is what I'd say,
I'd sit upon the bed near you not simply drift away.
I'd watch you while you're sleeping, and yawn when you did yawn.
You said it was forever, but little did we know
There'd come a time when one would fly, you'd stay and I would go.
You'll catch me standing, peeking round the corner of the door.
The hardest thin that I have learned, I miss you more and more.
So when you sit and creep inside the quiet place where souls do hide,
Remember that you're safe to stay, for I am never far away.

Peace, M. Mack & Family

I was shocked this morning (Friday) when I logged onto the cbs2chicago website and saw the first headline. Every morning I check the latest headlines as to what's going on at home (Chicago) because I now live in Boise Idaho where I work as the morning reporter for KIVI-TV, so logging on is my way of staying up to date on what's happening there. So before I went on the air this morning that is when I got the news.

I remember Randy while being a student at Columbia College Chicago. I first met him while visiting the studios of WGN on a field trip and then met him again as an intern at CBS 2. He was always nice to me and gave me great advice. He is one of the reasons why I love this business, Randy's wit and outgoing personality was great for the morning and I drew inspiration from him. He is indeed a rare species in this business.

I will truly miss logging onto the website and not seeing him in the clips. I pray that his family is safe and sound during this time as well as all of my friends at CBS 2.

Take care and much love.
Kelsey Minor
KIVI-TV/Boise

We have a special place in our hearts for Randy & the morning crew after having Ed in our Island Lake home doing a Backyard Weather segment – Randy's one-liners and wisecracks whenever Ed was on camera were priceless! When we saw him in Crystal Lake several months after that aired & introduced ourselves, he took the time to talk to us and we shared a few laughs over the show – a really fun experience for us and now, a wonderful memory of someone we'll miss seeing on the screen or in person. We have gotten out of bed for many mornings with smiles on our faces thanks to Randy, Roseanne, Susan & Ed. Our thoughts are with the rest of you as you face the task of continuing while dealing with losing Randy………Mike & Connie

I am sick. I loved Randy as if I knew him personally. I am up with them every morning from 5 a.m. and even the times when they had to start earlier. I send my sympathy to his family. I am really gonna miss him. He was so darn funny even without trying. I am sick from inside. My heart hurts. -- Bobbie J. Jones

I remember watching Randy on WGN Superstation, while away from home. As a native Chicagoan, Randy Salerno was a source of inspiration to a home sick individual. I understand the grief of losing a dear loved one and I empathize with his family. He will be greatly missed.
Be encouraged,
Darlene Gee, Evanston

What was amazing about Randy was the fact that not only was his wit a bright light to start your day, but his professional way of reporting the news. He had a rare quality. He was a fun guy, but he was also a great newsman. He made us laugh and he told us the reality of the news. He was the "Everyman" newsman. He had talent that many do not possess. God Bless his family and friends during this difficult time. -- Sean Parker

My deepest sympathy to randy's family and friends. I was lucky enough to have met randy at his home a few years back. I was there to repair his microwave. He was a genuinely nice person, and I had a great time talking sports with him. Being a snowmobiler for over 35 years myself, and being very familiar with plum lake, I know just how quickly something like this can happen. God bless randy, his family, and friends.
-- Wayne, Plato Center, Ill.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Randy Salerno's family my husband and I watch channel 2 news every morning and he always made my day, his humor and chemistry with the rest of the staff will be sorely missed. May God bless his family and the CBS 2 news family. -- Damita James, Laporte Indiana

I feel like I lost a friend today. I've enjoyed the channel 2 morning news for years now. Randy had such an amazing sense of humor, yet was such a professional. Randy made me laugh out loud everyday, what a special gift that was. Thank You Randy. My condolences to his wife and children. Chicago has lost a great one.
-- Kim, Crestwood, Ill.

It's a terrible shock to hear of the passing of Randy. I grew up in Elgin watching him and Roseanne.I moved to the east coast in '99, but stayed in touch with home through internet and cable. He and Roseanne would always keep my attention and make me laugh at some of the funny things that would happen. My prayers are with his family and all who knew him personally. Steve Breslich, Brookfield, Ct.

I don't know what to say.
Randy, Roseanne, Susan and Ed are the best people in broadcasting.
They are the best…..and now… one of them is gone. I can't believe it.
Randy was the best.
Would like to offer my condolences to his family at home and at CBS2.
Our prayers are with the family.
Valla con Dios Pardner.
-- Michael Collins

A joker with a wry sense of humor that will surely be missed as Chicago has lost a great Newsman!
My Hubby & I watched when Randy was on WGN with Rozanne. That was a wonderful chemistry!
Then CBS brought back the fun once again. I can't believe this! How sad for his Wife & Family.
I'm sure all the News Anchors from above are smiling & sharing stories (Fahey Flynn/John Drury/Carl Grayson...And the rest)
-- Laura & Ed Sircher

My heart and prayers go out to his family and friends. Although apparently a great, tragic, avoidable death.
We are snowmobilers up North and that is why drinking and driving do not mix, on a snowmobile as well as in a car.
May his death not be in vain.
-- Nancy Wilk, Elmwood Park

Every morning @ 6am I would watch CBS 2 News to see what the news was. I remember always seeing Randy Salerno being the anchor guy talking about the news in Chicago and in other places. I used to think he reminded me of Vince Vaughn a little bit with his hair and eyes. When I heard about this I was/am still shocked about this. I can't believe he's gone.

I'll never forget watching him on CBS 2 News.
-- Beverly

CBS2 Morning crew is an awesome team and Randy was the glue. He made my mornings better! I loved watching him and Roseanne, they reminded me of a brother and sister. My thoughts are with his family and of course, Roseanne, Susan and Ed. God Bless.
My mornings won't be the same.
-- Mel

To all, We felt like Randy was part of our morning household. With his Witty sense of humor to some of the weird faces he'd make during the stories. With this comes Joy and sorrow, we'll be selfish, because we don't have Randy any more, but he has a whole new crowd of Souls with his Love that he will be sharing stories with. And will still have the memoirs
to keep him here at home with us. As many have been saying, no one disliked Randy. I personally never meet Randy, and I have never wrote to a station about the passing of one of there personal, this is a first. Yet I still feel sorrow. Condolence to Randy's Family
and Children. To be fatherless is something far more sad than any physical things.
I don't know how political correct this is but "GOD BLESS RANDY"and his Family.
-- Bob H. in Plainfield.

I stopped breathing when Vince came on at the end of the news this morning, chocking back some tears. I started crying myself just completely in shock. I would call Randy "my Randy Salerno" and did the same with Ed. The whole team (Randy, Ed, Roseanne, Susan, Bill and Chris) were so refreshing to start the day -- every day. I had withdrawal when I was traveling and missed the morning show. Randy's death is a huge loss to all of Chicagoland. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. He will be missed!
--Jean Dawson, Oak Park, Ill.

My husband and I watch the morning news each morning during breakfast, and love Randy's sense of humor, and he is also a good journalist. I watched him on WGN morning news for years, and switched when I found out he was at CBS! I love some of his jokes, and he knows how to make you laugh.

My heart goes out to his family. They are in our thoughts and prayers!
We loved his smile, and great attitude. He never complained when things got tough! His love for sports was amazing. From Baseball to Football To Golf! He will be missed by all of his fans!

I was shocked when I found out it was him...so sad
-- Jakub the Starbucks guy.

I can't tell you how shocked I was to hear this. I was filled with disbelief. This is such a terrible loss. My heart goes out to Randy's wife, Irene and his children and the all of his CBS family. I really loved watching Randy and Roseanne in the morning and loved to see how he interacted with everyone. I felt they were all a family and that I, somehow, was part of it too. I guess that is why I, and so many others feel such a deep loss. I loved his wit and mannerism. It will really be hard not seeing him anymore.
-- Nancy, Bloomingdale, Ill.

Dear cbs2,

I have spent the last hour, with tears in my eyes, watching your tribute to Randy on your website. Although I never knew him personally, and only watched him occasionally in the morning, I am sorry I did not get to meet him.

It is on rare occasion that someone comes into your life that can touch you the way Randy has appeared to touch your hearts. I know that he watching over your team, and I am sure he is trying to find a way to make you all laugh, thats what he would want.

God Bless
-- Jeff Dostalek

For so long I had been frustrated with the news station I was watching. I was tired of their morning team!

I started surfing and landed on Channel 2. Not only did I find local suburban stories, but from day one, the morning team made me laugh..out loud! I think we can all agree...any day you start with a smile, or for that matter, laughing out loud, is a good day.

Your CBS morning team has been a blessing and Randy Salerno will be missed!

My prayer for the CBS family, the Salerno family and friends is that they can know this:

"God himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."

Deutornomy 31:8

Be a Blessing!
-- Mary-Kathryn

Dear CBS,
Unfortunately living in WI delayed us hearing of Randy's passing. We used to watch him faithfully when we lived in Chicago, My husband used to tease me about having a crush on him, I did. I actually saw him one day traveling in the news van when he was working for WGN, he smiled and waved and it made my day. We moved to the North a few years ago and greatly missed him making us laugh. We have lost a great guy. Our sympathies to all of you @ CBS, his family and all of the Chicago area. It is truly a loss that has been felt greatly. We will miss you Randy!
-- Lisa in WI

I was just devastated this morning when I heard the news of Randy's passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

I was so shocked to hear about the death of Randy. I have a lot of choices every morning as to what channel to watch. I watch channel 2 because of Randy. I remember emailing him not to long ago, he took the time to answer me. I've lost a friend. My prayers go out to his family and co-workers ...
Sincerely ... Grant

I have only been here 3 years and instantly chose Channel 2 as my news station. I watched Randy every morning before I went to work. Together he and Roseanne had great chemistry and such a quick wit. He will surely be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and close friends.
-- K. Swift

Randy had me glued to the TV with his smirk funny remarks. He will be greatly missed.
-- Elva Mejia

We are deeply saddened by the loss of a favorite of ours. We have watched and enjoyed Randy every morning. Our prayers are offered for his family and friends. We will miss him very much.
-- Greg & Linda, Addison, lll.

My condolences go to Randy Salermo's widow, children, friends, and co-workers. I was shocked to wake up this morning and not see him co-anchoring the 11 a.m. news! It took my breath away. For years, I watched him on WGN with Roseanne before they came to CBS. He was always very professional and humorous as only he could be. I remember him pouring out his heart of brotherly love for Roseanne shorly after coming to CBS. It was very touching that this tough guy was a gentleman and protector who showed so much respect to his co-anchor and friend. My prayers are with all of you.

I woke up this morning to the sad news of the passing of Randy Salerno. The feeling that overtook me was of complete devastation. I had watched him as a frequent contributor on channel 9 for many years, and was thrilled when he and Rosanne were announced as the new morning team for CBS2. While I have never met Randy, I felt a sense of loss - like I had lost a good friend. While I thought no one might understand how one could feel that way over someone you did not personally know, I feel it is a testament to his character that so many other viewers who did not personally know him either, feel just as saddened as I do. My most sincerest condolences go out to Salerno's family, friends and colleagues.
Sincerely,

Good-Bye Randy.
Love,
Jay

I am a fan of the morning show (Ed, Susan, Roseanne, Randy) - they are all special, but Randy had a way of stealing the show.

Now my weekday mornings with the Channel 2 news team will be one less. I as a faithful viewer will miss Randy.
My prayers and thoughts to his friends and mostly to his family who are trying to cope with such a tragic loss.

Sincerely,
Diane Schallhorn

Crystal Lake family mourning the passing of Randy Salerno, or has we knew him "Coach Randy".

We are a local family in Crystal lake with 3 children, our 2 oldest, Sydney & Connor go to school with Randy's youngest children and played sports with them. Connor often plays with little Charlie and Sydney & Sloan played softball together for a few years with Dave & Randy coaching together. The kids are pretty broken up about it. To them Coach Randy was jus another Dad helping out, pitching baseballs/softballs, playing catch, acting silly. To us and other parents he was one of us, helping out in the trenches of the elementary school winter carnival games, and school activities. He was never assuming and never really felt the need to mention what he did for a living. Having to do the early news cast, he still was out on the fields with the kids at 6PM in the evening trying to better their game. He was a genuine, kind, warm soul, whose face we will miss around town, at school and on the fields. He was exactly what he appeared to be a Dad who loved his kids and wanted to spend time with them. Crystal Lake has lost one its best residents. Our hearts go out to Irene and their wonderful children!

I just wanted to share the perspective of the kind of person he is here, in little suburban Crystal Lake.

In Loving Memory of Randy,
Jennifer & Dave, Sydney, Connor & Shannon Devitt

When I heard the news this morning, I just stood there in disbelief. Randy was always part of my morning routine. Not being a morning person myself, I found the "perkiness" on those other stations just a little too much. Randy had that great dry humor and quick wit. He was the kind of person you would want to have a beer with at a bar if you could – so down to earth. He and the rest of the morning team were such a great combination. He always made me laugh and yet he was also such a professional when it came to the serious news. My heart goes out to his family as well as his coworkers who I am sure are devastated by his loss.

Sorry for you lost to the Family of CBS and Randy Family, be strong and know that God knows best and that he was doing something that he enjoy.

I loved Randy Salerno. Only reason I watched Channel 2 news at 5:00am. Will miss his humor and sarcasm. My prayers are with his family.

We are so saddened by the news this morning about the loss of Randy Salerno. We feel like we have lost a personal friend.

Randy, Susan, Roseanne, and Ed were always like part of our family. May God bless his wife, children and family and all his CBS family and friends. We will miss him so much. Our mornings will not be the same without him.
-- Jean

Randy was one of my favorite broadcasters when I lived in IL, mainly because he was so natural. He was one of the few news anchors I've seen who didn't put on the "newscaster" voice, body language and persona -- it felt like he was just talking to you. He seemed like a very down-to-earth, likable guy through the TV, which sounds like it was the case in real life too. What a tragedy -- our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
-- Carrie Calgaro, Appleton, Wis.

Chicago has lost a truly wonderful news person. Randy made listening to the news a bright and informative privilege. Chicagoland will miss his warming smile and enjoyable start to our day.
-- Marilyn K. Render

Like many others have said, this feels like losing a family member. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and kids and with his CBS2 family. I will miss seeing him in the mornings while I get ready for work. I can't help but smile and think about how he used to poke fun at the images of Jesus that people would claim they had in trees, fruit, whatever. Now Randy sees and knows the real image… God Speed, Mr. Salerno.
-- Terri M., Chicago

I love/d watching the CBS morning news and woke to it every morning like I was joining friends.
Randy Salerno's humor, smirk and deadpan delivery got me every time. And I loved how he, Roseanne Tellez, Ed Curran, Susan Carlson (and Bill Z for his segment) interacted.

This morning my television connection to channel two was cutting in and out so I switched to an (of course sub-stand!) competitor. I missed his television friends sharing the news of Randy's passing. It's hard to imagine such a vibrant presence is gone. But how lucky we were to have him while his candle burned.

My sympathy to his family, his CBS family, viewer family and friends.
-- Suzette Vandewiele, Romeoville

We have lost a friend that we had breakfast with every morning, and we will miss him very much. Randy, Roseanne, Ed, Susan and Bill gave the morning news a casual, informative, breezy way to start the day. Our condolences to his family at home, to his family at the station and to the huge family in the Chicago area that welcomed him into their homes every morning.

My heart is heavy to learn the passing of Randy. The chemistry he had on screen as a reporter and journalist was truly a gift. What a loss for everyone in Chicago. My condolences to his family and friends.
-- Lynn Philips, Bartlett, Ill.

I knew Randy from WHOI and WMBD in Peoria as well as WGN...I am in shock. As a college student, I worked for WMBD and remember his "spiderman" climb up a Bradley University campus wall...
My prayers are with the family. I am soooo sorry

Randy made our morning. Our condolences…..we will miss him.
-- TJ and Cassie, Gilberts, IL

I worked with Randy and his wife Irene at WGN. Although I left 13 years ago and rarely had contact with Randy since, it still feels as though I've lost a friend.

Today everyone is talking about his sense of humor and his relaxed take on life. He was indeed the kind of person who made you feel better when he walked in the room.

God Bless Irene and their children. They didn't have nearly enough time with him.
-- Matt Ebach, Chicago

Our thoughts and prayers are with Randy , his immediate family, friends and his family at CBS 2. Randy was one of a kind when it came to reporting the news. His passion was genuine and it showed in his work. He was serious about reporting the news and humorous when least expected. We are faithful viewers of CBS 2 Morning News and know that the loss of this wonderful man will leave a void. Stay strong CBS 2!!
Although we did not know Randy personally, my family and I will miss Randy and share your loss as if it was our own.

I knew Randy when he worked in Peoria and then Albany, as he was actually a member of my family at that time. I've been watching all of your wonderful tributes via the Internet today and I think you are doing a wonderful job in what I know must be very trying circumstances.

Randy never knew this, but he was the person that inspired me to a career in television news and I am so thankful he was a part of my life at the time I was making those decisions. It was hard not to catch his love of the business and from the many tributes I can see how that continued throughout his life.

One cold, winter day when I was in high school I came home to find that Randy had cleared away the snow from a large section of the lake behind our house for ice-skating. He used just a shovel and it took him more than two hours of hard work, but after all that the people he cleared it for had only spent about 5 minutes skating before they declared it too cold and went back inside! I remember thinking how most people would have been frustrated by that, but he just laughed and chalked it up to good exercise, I think.

In any case, thank you - from the bottom of my heart - for letting him be a part of so many peoples' lives and memories.

Sincerely,
Shannon Tebben-Sandoval

I know that Roseanne will miss Randy very much, because had been working with eachother of so long. I was sad to hear about his death. My best wishes and prayers will be in my thoughts.

I was stunned for a moment, when I heard the news this morning. It was like hearing about a close friend or family member. The channel 2 morning news team has been a part of my household for a long time and once Randy, Roseanne, Ed, Susan & Bill joined the team it was something that I would look forward to every morning while getting ready for work. Not to take anything from the rest of the crew, but it was Randy wit, character and since of humor that made the show so enjoyable to watch.

I know this must be a very difficult time for his family as well as for the CBS Chicago news team. My prayers go out to all. Hold on and be strong.

I made time every morning to sit with my cup of coffee

I would like to offer my sincere condolences to all of the CBS morning news team. This was such a tragic loss of someone who I thoroughly enjoyed watching every morning. Since he was watched at my home every morning, we almost felt like he was part of out family.

When the announcement was made this morning. I was truly stunned by the news. I felt as if I lost a friend even though I never met him. But, because of his outstanding personality, quick wit and genuineness, he was part of our everyday routine.

I would also like to offer my condolences to his wife and children as this will create a void in their lives that will never be filled.

He will be remembered always.
-- Thomas E. Lyons

I started watching Channel 2 news a few years ago. It was an accident that CBS was on my television that morning. Being too tired to change the channel, it was left on as I started my morning routine.
In the background, I heard a funny comment about a news story that was just on. Turning my head, I saw Randy Salerno making his follow announcers laugh.
I thought it was a fluke. Then a few minute later, another quick-witted comment.
The next morning I tuned in to find the same witty banter as the day before.
Channel 2 has been turned on every week day morning since. Randy always made me smile & laugh.
It will be strange not to see him with his friends in the morning, telling me what is happening in our world.
He will be missed.
-- Kathleen Roth

I always enjoyed watching Randy on CBS and on WGN. He had such a wonderful smile and fun personality. He made whatever he was reporting on look fun. I know he will be missed by many. My heart goes out to his friends and family. I know he will be smiling down on all of us.

I've only lived in Chicago for 3 years and have been watching the CBS 2 News team since I've moved here. As I was getting ready for work this morning, as is usual for me, I had the news on, and was so shocked and saddened to hear of Randy's death.

I hope everyone in television understands how much of our lives you become because we invite you in to it every day. You are more than family for us, you are a choice. As a person who lost her husband suddenly 5 years ago, I understand what a tragic and earth shattering loss this is to Randy's family, co-workers, and friends. My heart is with you in your time of shock and sadness.

I've read much of what others have written today, and agree with all of the sentiments that people have expressed. Randy was a staple in my life. But, I can tell you this, we will never forget Randy. That is especially true for those closest to him. It takes a while for the hurt and shock to go away. For me, the sense of gratitude that I have for knowing my husband and having him as long as I did takes precedence over the sadness now, but I still think of him every single day.

Some people's stars shine so bright they will never fade. I believe that is true for Randy.

To all of his family, co-workers, friends, and viewers, I send you my heartfelt condolences. We were all lucky to be part of this charismatic man's life (even if it was as a viewer).
-- Lisa M. Nuske

I watched Randy when he was on WGN. When he made the switch to CBS, so did I! I so enjoyed watching Randy and Roseanne every morning! They were terrific together and complemented each other so well! Randy, Roseanne, Susan and Ed what a team! So...funny and so...down to earth, it felt like you knew him! He will truly be missed!!! My thoughts and prayers are with his family and with you all, his other family.
Sincerely,

I have followed Mr. Randy Salerno since his days on WGN and then his switch to CBS. I live a couple homes down from his parents and knowing them makes it obvious from where he got his kind heart.

My sympathy goes out to not only his wife & children but to his parents as well.

My mornings will not be the same without you Randy.
-- Karen, McHenry

I was deeply saddened when I heard the tragic news of Randy Salerno's passing. He was a truly spirited person and always brought joy to the screen when he reported the news. Working as an intern this past summer, I would often see Randy walking through the halls talking and laughing with his colleagues. It was obvious how much he was admired by everyone there, both for his wonderful personality and his professionalism on the job. I had the pleasure of meeting him during my time at CBS, it was a brief encounter, and even so he was genuinely kind and gracious. My heart and prayers go out to his friends and family.

Sincerely,

Randy Salerno was a good journalist. Even though I did not know him personally He was a very good news anchor. He worked for WGN TV for 11 years and then he switched to WBBM CBS 2 Chicago news. I watched him sometimes both on WGN, and on CBS 2 Chicago. He was a great news anchor. I know WGN TV Channel 9, and CBS 2 Chicago are very saddened and crushed by this news. I live in Warrenville Illinois. My name is Dylan Schaefer I am 16 years old. I liked Randy Salerno. Everybody from WGN and CBS will miss him. He was only 45 years old. That is my comment. To the CBS 2 Chicago Staff,

I am deeply saddened and shocked to hear of Randy's passing. I always looked forward to waking up to the news every morning with Randy, Roseanne, Susan, Ed, Bill and Kris. Randy and Roseanne's delivery of the news was always very professional, but yet they were able to have fun. The bond that Randy had with the rest of the team was obvious. The team's ability to be lighthearted, but yet be professional was a nice change. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, co-workers and friends. It's such a tragedy to loose someone you care about, but even more when they were so young.

Sincerely,
Kimberly Bonk – Round Lake, IL

Dear Channel 2 Morning News Team,

The sadness I feel over the sudden death of Randy Salerno is difficult to process. Here is a man whom I have never met, yet he was somehow a very large presence in my daily life.

I had a school-girl crush on Randy since he first turned up on my Channel 2 Morning News. Of course this fondness for him was extremely respectful in nature; it is evident that he was a very happy family-man. Each morning, I got a kick out of teasing my significant other by saying "Ooooh! My 'boyfriend' is on"!

I just adored his delivery. He was serious when circumstances called for decorum yet the mischievous twinkle in his eye seemed to always be anticipating the next witticism he could seamlessly work into the most benign report. I value the humanity he and the Morning Team share with the viewers. One almost feels as if they know these people personally. I am often struck by the stiffness of other newscasters when I am unable to watch Randy and his colleagues. It was his daily banter and quips that made me feel as if he was among my circle of friends.

It's unusual and a bit disconcerting to feel so strongly about someone whom I've never even become acquainted with beyond the limits of my TV set. Randy somehow managed to touch my life unexpectedly. I cannot properly express the sadness and the emptiness that Randy's passing will surely leave as I start my day. Accepting the absence of Randy on the morning news will make my 5AM wake-up that much more difficult.

My deepest sympathy goes out to his wife and children and all those who knew and loved him. Whether one's relationship with Randy was personal or merely viewer-to-newscaster, he will be greatly missed by all who enjoyed his presence in their lives.

Fondest regards,
Kristin Thresher
