CBS 2 Rolls Out News For The Future
CBS 2 is transitioning to high definition news gathering with the purchase of 25 Sony XDCAM HD cameras and Canon HD lenses. Over the next two months, CBS 2 will deploy these cameras and become Chicago's largest HD newsgathering team. CBS 2 is also converting every live news truck and traveling crew to laptop/desktop computer editing. The new gear also provides editing capability in the actual camera.
"CBS 2 is proud to be the market leader in HD video acquisition," said Joe Ahern, President and General Manager of the station. "High definition will soon be the new standard in broadcasting. When that happens, CBS 2 will be ready with years of archival material in HD."
"This takes our newsgathering to the highest technical level in Chicago," said Carol Fowler, CBS 2's Vice President/News Director. "These HD cameras will allow CBS 2 photographers to record video and audio of superb quality directly onto a DVD-like disc, which gives us a competitive edge. CBS 2 gains the ability to report spot news faster than technology has ever allowed before. The days of shooting videotape, which takes longer to screen and edit, are over."
CBS 2 is also acquiring microphones capable of storing audio as a computer file. "This, in combination with technology available in the camera, will allow news material to be fed to the station through normal internet technology making any place with connectivity a place to file a story, even your neighborhood Starbucks," added Tom Schnecke, Vice President/Director of Engineering.
