Weller Missing In Action For Historic Bailout Vote
WASHINGTON (AP) ―
The U.S. House has 435 members, but only 433 were present to vote on a $700 billion bailout bill to deal with the nation's economic crisis.
One member -- Ohio Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones -- recently died.
The only other member to miss Monday's vote -- Congressman Jerry Weller -- was away on a "family matter." That's according to a one-sentence statement released by the Illinois Republican's office.
Another vote on the bailout plan is slated for Friday, and Weller has since returned to the Capitol. But both he and his spokesman haven't returned repeated phone messages left for him in Washington and at his district office seeking further explanation.
Weller is a seven-term congressman from Grundy County who serves north-central Illinois.
He isn't seeking re-election.
