Twitter Advice For Mayor Daley

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Oprah does it. So does the president. And now, even Mayor Daley is sending tweets. On the mayor's new Twitter page, he has more than 1,000 followers. He's not the only politician keeping in touch with people this way. But are some people sharing too much information, too often?

CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez wonders, is possible to tweet too much? That's certainly one thing that bugs some fellow tweeters.

CBS 2 asked a politician and a media expert to offer tips to one of our city's newest tweeters – Mayor Daley.

Cook County Commissioner Tony Peraica has more than 2,500 Twitter followers, with whom he shares comments made in board meetings, links to favorite articles, even news tips.

What he doesn't like is when officials let their aides do their tweeting.

"Mayor, if you're watching, don't do that," Peraica said. "It's bad form. I think it should be personal, or don't do it."

Peraica says his postings, up to 20 a day, reflect his personality and philosophy.

Which brings us to our next tip for the mayor: how many tweets a day are too many?

"You're not imposing yourself upon anyone," Peraica said. "You're just making the information available, and if they want to read it, that's fine. If they don't, they don't have to."

"For a 10-year-old girl, perpetual tweeting is in fact a way of life, and I think that's perfectly appropriate," said Flashpoint President Howard Tullman. "For somebody who has a real life and is a government servant and who is engaged in doing other useful activities, then occasionally it may be an important source of information, but by and large, it's not a substantive communication channel."

CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez joined Twitter Wednesday, and her very first tweet was a question: What should she avoid doing on Twitter?

One big no-no, and a rule the mayor is not likely to violate, is don't share too much information.

A response from Alexa says, "please don't swear."

Glamah says she hates when someone "makes conversation, then sends spam."

And what bugs Joshua? "News anchors plugging their Twitter accounts when they should be reporting news."
