Truth In Politics: Todd Stroger On The Hot Seat

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Cook County Board President Todd Stroger spoke exclusively with CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery Wednesday night about why Stroger backed out of a planned meeting with Palatine officials.

Stroger said he canceled his attendance because Palatine officials unilaterally changed the format, making it a village board meeting instead of a free-wheeling public forum Stroger said he was initially was promised.

"I didn't think that was a good idea. It was not what we discussed," Stroger said. "They tried to take over the meeting and be the ones asking questions instead of your average citizen."

Stroger faces a taxpayer rebellion in the northwest suburbs after the county imposed a $450 million sales tax hike to fill a budget gap of about half that size.

A proposal pending in Springfield would let voters throw Stroger and other elected officials out of office in mid-term.

Asked if getting rid of him would lower the tax rate, Stroger said, "Getting rid of me wouldn't lower taxes whatsoever. Maybe the next person might cut services."

Stroger promised CBS 2 that despite canceling his appearance at Harper College Wednesday night he will quickly re-schedule it.

Asked for the truth, he said, "We'll be out in Palatine. And we'll be in other places all around the county letting people know where their tax dollars go."

That's the county board president's promise. We'll be watching. We'll let you know by May 31 whether he told us the truth.
