State Lawmakers Shout Over Recall Amendment
Amendment Would Allow Voters To Recall Governor, Other Top Leaders
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) ―
Tempers flared at the Capitol today as a top ally to Gov. Rod Blagojevich angrily condemned an effort that would let voters possibly recall the governor and other top leaders from office.
The House debated at some length the merits of a proposed constitutional recall amendment for constitutional officers and lawmakers, even though a final House vote won't come until next week.
Some supporters have made it clear it's aimed at Blagojevich. His tussles with lawmakers have created major gridlock on key issues for the last year.
Rep. Jay Hoffman called the amendment unnecessary and urged legislators to stop finger-pointing and come up with solutions.
He shouted an expletive to end his floor speech, a rarity in the Legislature.
