A Breakdown Of The Proposed State Budget Cuts
Thousands Could Lose Jobs, Services
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CBS) ―
If the Illinois General Assembly approves its 50 percent budget cut, the resulting $9.2 billion funding gap would likely force the following cuts and much more:
1. Department of Human Services
Projected cut: $1 billion plus
Targeted programs:
Child care assistance: $271 million
Provider rate cut: $251 million
Developmental disabled programs: $103 million
Addiction treatment: $56 million
Mental health treatment: $108 million
Community health programs: $78 million
Closing state hospitals, schools and resource centers: $232 million
Projected results: service cuts affecting hundreds of thousands of people; 5,400 state jobs lost
2. Department of Children and Family Services
Projected cut: $388 billion
Targeted programs:
Adoption and foster care: $109 million
Foster care parents payments: $54 million
Youth Mental health programs: $46 million
Foster care case management: $41 million
Daycare: $26 million
Adoption/foster care support: $8 million
Child advocacy center support: $4 million
Closing field offices: $13 million
Projected results: eliminate services to 16,000 children and their families; nearly 1,200 jobs lost
3. Department on Aging
Projected cut: $388 million
Targeted programs:
Eliminating and reducing community care: $315 million
Reducing case management: $18 million
Property tax relief grants: $24 million
Projected results: 300,000 seniors and disabled people will be affected
4. Illinois Department of Public Health
Projected cut: $61 million
Targeted programs:
Reduced breast cancer screening: $9 million
Childhood vaccines: $5 million
Infectious disease services: $17 million
Preventive services: $9.5 million
Nursing home neglect inspection: $4 million
Swim pool monitoring: $2 million
Projected results: 104 job layoffs
5. Illinois student assistance commission
Projected cut: $275 million
Targeted programs:
Reducing scholarships: $242 million
No book stipends for college: $5 million
No minority teacher scholarships: $3 million
Future teachers scholarships: $7 million
Projected result: eliminating these and other sholarship programs will affect
184,000 students
CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reported that the list of five departments is the only one available, but about 26 major state departments and agencies would be affected. No one from the state was able to provide a complete list.
