Senate appointee Roland Burris has released a statement reaffirming his resolve to "work hard for the people of Illinois" as the state's junior senator.
Burris said late Saturday that he looks forward to "getting sworn in and working with the other members of Congress to address our country's struggling economy and healthcare crisis."
The former Illinois attorney general's comments came hours after a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid reiterated his rejection of any appointee named by embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Blagojevich appointed Burris to the seat earlier this week.
Burris plans to speak Sunday on Chicago's South Side to a rally of community leaders organized by U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush.
