Gov. Pat Quinn thinks civil unions are likely in the future for same-sex couples in Illinois.
The Daily Herald reported Tuesday that Quinn discussed the proposal during a meeting at Harper College in Palatine.
Quinn said he thinks Springfield lawmakers will eventually pass legislation in favor of civil unions, which would give gay and lesbian couples the same rights as those of married heterosexual couples, but would not be the same as same sex marriages.
"I think that's probably where the legislature is headed in the state," Quinn was quoted in the Daily Herald.
A bill giving same sex couples the right to form civil unions is pending in the Illinois House. The Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, or HB 2234, passed out of committee on March 5.
State Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago) sponsored the bill. Harris also issued a bill for same sex marriage a few years ago, but later abandoned it.
