Governor Says Rep. Davis Would Make Great Senator

CHICAGO (AP) ― Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich says Congressman Danny Davis would make a great U.S. senator and a good replacement for President-elect Barack Obama.

But the governor's hint came with a caution: He hasn't made up his mind about filling the vacancy yet. Blagojevich spoke Thursday alongside Davis at a Chicago homeless shelter.

The governor's remarks came after Davis said he'd be happy to serve if appointed. And when Blagojevich mistakenly referred to Davis as "senator," reporters questioned him about the slip.

Blagojevich says he must follow the proper process for choosing someone to serve Obama's remaining years as junior senator. He says he's still on track to appoint a successor by the end of the year.
