Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain was on Democratic rival Barack Obama's home turf again Wednesday, hoping to raise about $2 million for his campaign at a Drake Hotel fundraiser.
CBS 2 Political Editor reports that the $2 million would be shared by the candidate's own fund, McCain '08 and the national Republican Party's Victory Fund.
McCain has insisted he is not writing off Illinois, but his activities at the Drake Hotel on Wednesday were closed to press and public. When McCain has visited Chicago, it's been all about money; he's been doing all of his campaigning elsewhere.
McCain was also at the Washington, D.C., funeral for NBC newsman Tim Russert on Wednesday and then visited Missouri for a number of campaign stops.
Meantime, McCain's Illinois campaign co-chair took Obama to task for allegedly ignoring his duties to the people of Illinois.
Illinois Rep. James Durkin said Obama should be doing more to help settle the political infighting in Springfield that has led to problems in passing a balanced state budget the past few years.
"He's the Democratic nominee for the president.
If he's really interested in the people of the state, our leaders in Washington need to intervene, spend some time in Springfield.
He needs to go down there and referee this scrum or this wrestling match that's been going on for three years," Durkin said.
While Obama has been known to occasionally referee a basketball game, he doesn't appear to be eager to get down to Springfield, where they play a much messier game. Obama's campaign said he has no comment on "this example of politics as usual."
