The Chicago Sun-Times endorsed U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. to take President-elect Barack Obama's place in the U.S. Senate, saying Jackson "would serve our state – our entire state – well."
Gov. Rod Blagojevich must appoint a replacement for Obama. Jackson's is among the names that have been floated, along with Reps. Danny Davis, Jan Schakowsky and Luis Gutierrez, and Illinois Veteran's Affairs Director Tammy Duckworth.
In their endorsement, the Sun-Times compared Jackson to Obama.
"Jackson at times reminds us more of the consensus-inclined Obama, seeking to rise above race and factionalism, than his honorable but more divisive father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson. The son has even called out the father when he felt it necessary," the Sun-Times editorial said, pointing out that the younger Jackson had taken his father to task for some remarks the elder Jackson whispered about Obama during a Fox News Channel appearance last summer.
The Sun-Times also said Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan "would make a terrific Senator," but said it was unlikely that Blagojevich would appoint her given his feud with her father, Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan. The editorial also said Madigan has her eye on the governor's mansion in 2010.
Blagojevich says he must follow the proper process for choosing someone to serve Obama's remaining years as junior senator. He says he's still on track to appoint a successor by the end of the year.
