State Budget Deadline Looms As Lawmakers Return

Budget Agreement Is Due Saturday

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) ― State lawmakers are headed back to work with a Saturday deadline to get done fast approaching.

Legislators return to the state Capitol this afternoon to try to agree on a new state budget and finish other business by Saturday. After that day, the session goes into overtime.

House and Senate Democrats approved dueling budget plans last week.

The Senate plans to take up two hotly debated ways to pay for its proposal: $16 billion in borrowing to pay off pension debt and $530 million from sweeping money out of special state funds. If either of those fail, it could complicate efforts to quickly reach a budget agreement.

Lawmakers are also trying to get an ethics bill to the governor and deal with other outstanding issues this week.
