Exit Poll Breaks Down Obama Blowout In Illinois
Illinois Is Only State With No Significant Gender Gap, CBS News Poll Says
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
A CBS News exit poll Tuesday showed an Obama blowout across the board, and indicated that Illinois was the only state with no significant gender gap.
Final numbers for the exit poll indicated that among Illinois Democratic voters, 68 percent voted for Barack Obama, 30 percent voted for Hillary Clinton, and 2 percent voted for John Edwards despite his recent withdrawal from the race.
Among African-American Illinois voters, 94 percent of voted for Obama, while only 5 percent voted for Clinton. Among white voters, 62 percent voted for Obama, compared with 36 percent for Clinton, and among Hispanic voters, 52 percent voted for Obama and 46 percent voted for Clinton.
Obama captured the vote of 60 percent of white men compared with 39 percent for Clinton, and he took 64 percent of white women's vote compared with 33 percent for Clinton, the poll said.
The poll indicated that Clinton's numbers in Illinois were best among voters 65 or older. Of those voters, 51 percent voted for Obama, while 44 percent voted for Clinton.
Among voters 18 to 64, 71 percent voted for Obama, while 27 percent voted for Clinton.
The poll indicated that Democratic voters statewide were 23 percent African-American, 16 percent Hispanic and 58 percent white. The poll also indicated that the Illinois Democratic electorate was 58 percent female and 42 percent male.
In addition, the poll also indicated that Obama polled far better in Clinton's home state of New York than Clinton did in Illinois.
Clinton captured 56 percent of the votes in New York state compared with 47 percent of Obama. A significant gender gap was seen among white voters in New York, with only 52 percent of white men voting for Clinton compared with 42 percent for Obama, while 62 percent of white women voted for Clinton compared with 34 percent for Obama.
Women make up nearly 60 percent of the New York electorate.
The CBS News poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.
