House Cancels Upcoming Session On Gaming, Transit

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) ― Feuding at the state Capitol over gambling expansion and mass transit aid has claimed another casualty.

House Speaker Michael Madigan on Friday canceled a planned session for early next week.

The House was scheduled to return to work Monday and vote on Madigan's major gambling expansion proposal and funding for the Chicago area's mass transit systems.

But Madigan says there's no reason to come back because other leaders haven't yet backed his plans for a revamped, independent Illinois Gaming Board to oversee new casinos.

He urged lawmakers to encourage the governor and other "recalcitrant" leaders to support his idea.
