Gov. Blagojevich on Monday announced special elections to be held in early 2008 to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Dennis Hastert.
A primary will be held Feb. 5 and a special election March 8, according to a news release from the governor's office.
Hastert submitted a letter to the governor announcing his resignation on Nov. 26. The Plano Republican served nearly 21 years in Congress, where he was the longest-serving Republican House Speaker.
Blagojevich scheduled the special primary for Feb. 5, Illinois' regularly scheduled primary date, as requested by Hastert to minimize inconvenience to voters of counties in the 14th Congressional District, the release said. The district includes parts of DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Henry, Bureau, Whiteside and Lee counties.
