Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert is endorsing Republican businessman Jim Oberweis to fill the congressional seat Hastert vacated last month after 21 years in Washington.
Hastert says there are a number of good candidates in the GOP primary.
But he says Oberweis has "the judgment and temperament" to be a good congressman, as well as integrity and a conservative philosophy that fits the district.
During a morning news conference, Oberweis said he's honored and humbled to receive the endorsement.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich scheduled a special election for Feb. 5 to vote for candidates to fill the rest of Hastert's term, and the special general election will be March 8.
