Blagojevich Appoints First Latino Deputy Governor

Dean Martinez To Oversee Illinois Economic Development

CHICAGO (STNG) ― Gov. Rod Blagojevich on Monday announced the appointment of Dean Martinez as the state's first Latino deputy governor in the state's history.

Martinez, the son of Cuban immigrants, will join Deputy Governors Bob Greenlee and Louanner Peters, according to a release from the Governor's office.

Martinez, 33, has been secretary of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. The governor's office also said Michael McRaith will succeed Martinez. McRaith has been director of the Illinois Division of Insurance.

In his new role, Martinez will oversee the state's economic development, infrastructure, business regulation and environmental agencies. He will also serve as a close advisor to the Governor on policies and initiatives to create jobs, invest in infrastructure, stimulate the Illinois economy and advance the Governor's environmental agenda, the release said.

A spokesman for the governor said Martinez will assume the duties of Chief Operating Officer John Filan, who will become executive director of the Illinois Finance Authority.
