Cook County Health System Laying Off 335

Plan Will Save Cook County Taxpayers $60 Million

CHICAGO (AP) ― The Cook County Health and Hospitals System is notifying 335 employees they will be laid off as part of a previously announced plan to cut $60 million from its budget.

Most of those targeted for layoff are support staff such as food service and maintenance workers at the county's hospitals and clinics. The job cuts will take place in January.

In a statement Wednesday, health system officials said some patient-care providers in "areas where patient population doesn't support the staffing levels" will also be laid off.

Health system chief executive officer William Foley said when the independent health system was established, the county's board ordered a performance improvement assessment study. He said the study found some areas needed adjustments in staffing.

In addition to the layoffs, 700 vacant positions will be eliminated.
