Clinton In Hammond, Ind., Promises Job Growth
HAMMOND, Ind. (CBS) ―
Presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton is in Hammond, Ind., Friday night on a two-day swing through the state, just weeks before what's shaping up to be an important primary.
CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery reports the senator is hoping to rally some Hoosier support with the message of jobs, jobs, jobs.
Within moments of stepping on stage Clinton had a message for Democratic Party leaders: "There are some people who wanted to stop this election," she said. "And I gotta tell you, I think it's pretty exciting that Indiana is gonna get to pick the next president of the United States."
Her campaign focus in this heavily industrialized blue-collar corner of the Hoosier state is the economy.
"My campaign is about jobs, jobs, jobs," she said at a rally Friday. "I'm looking into the faces of people whose parents and grandparents, who yourselves, whose children have made such a contribution."
Less than 1 percent of the faces in the crowd were African American, but Hammond is so close to Sen. Barack Obama's South Side home we can almost reach out and touch it.
Clinton stirred supporters with promises of reviving the region's shrinking steel industry.
"We know how to get the economy going again, create those jobs, keep those steel mills working," Clinton said.
While her husband largely failed to deliver on similar promises in the 1990s to block imported steel and reopen mills here, Clinton blamed Republicans who controlled Congress then. She said with Democrats in control, she would deliver on her promises.
