A Cook County Board committee on Thursday passed a proposal which could ban the purchase of bottled water.
The board Environmental Control Committee passed the proposed ordinance, initiated by Commissioner Mike Quigley (D-10th). If passed by the full County Board, the new law would take effect on Feb. 1, 2008.
The ordinance deals primarily with the five-gallon water bottles used on office water coolers.
Quigley said Cook County spends about $400,000 a year on bottled water. He sponsored the proposal because he says the county should not be paying for water it is available for free from the tap.
Commissioner William Beavers (D-4th) was the only one on the committee to vote against the proposal, saying "nobody knows what we're voting for."
The proposal will now go to the full County Board for debate and a vote at an unspecified future date.
