DuPage Prosecutor Runs For Ill. Attorney General

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) ― DuPage County State's Attorney Joseph Birkett is running for Illinois attorney general.

Birkett said Thursday that he considered running for governor but decided on attorney general instead. In a video announcement, Birkett says he wants to remain a prosecutor.

Birkett says his goals include fighting public corruption and gang violence.

The Republican lost the 2002 race for attorney general to Lisa Madigan, who is not expected to seek re-election next year. Birkett also was the GOP candidate for lieutenant governor in 2006.

Birkett has been state's attorney since 1996.
