Democrat Anita Alvarez defeated Republican Tony Peraica Tuesday to be elected the first woman and Latina to be elected Cook County State's Attorney.
With 90 percent of the precincts reporting, Alvarez won 1,207,224 votes, or 69 percent, compared to 446,702 votes for Peraica, or 26 percent, and 88,518 votes, or 5 percent, for Green Party candidate Thomas O'Brien.
As CBS 2's Mike Parker reports, Alvarez pledged to renew the battle against gun violence and against domestic violence, and she pledged to battle political corruption. She also promised to tell the truth.
"Ladies and gentlemen, there is a new state's attorney in town, and she is ready to roll up her sleeves of her power red suits and get down to business," Alvarez said. "I'm still one of the original hockey moms. You know I am the real hockey mom, and I can teach Sarah Palin a thing or two."
Alvarez had the support of Mayor Richard M. Daley and most of the city's Democratic ward organizations. Peraica was counting heavily on the support of black Democrats, which was a tall order given the Barack Obama tsunami in Chicago.
