It's one of the best parts of having a dog in Chicago: playing with your best friend at a dog park. But for one pet parent, a day at the beach launched a desperate search. Her dog Che vanished last week while playing at a Chicago dog beach. And as CBS 2's Jim Williams reports, now his devastated mother is going to extremes to get him back.
Che is a 6-month old Sharpei-Pug mix. His owner says the puppy had never left her side, not for a moment, until last Friday. Now she's willing to open her checkbook in a big way to get him back.
It has been a frantic five days for Rebecca Blabolil. She's handing out flyers to everyone she meets and searching a mile of the lakefront.
"I've canvassed this entire beachfront from Foster all the way down to Montrose," Blabolil said.
It was at the Montrose dog beach on Friday that Rebecca was watching a friend throw a Frisbee to his dog. For a moment, she took her eye off her puppy, Che. When she turned back, Che was gone; stolen, Rebecca believes, in a beach surrounded by fences.
"My heart sank. I knew pretty quickly that someone had taken him," Blabolil said. "I know that he is not the kind of dog that runs off. So I was devastated pretty instantly. I knew that something bad had happened, and that I wasn't sure how I was going to find him."
She thought a reward might help: $2,500.
"I love him. He is like my child," Blabolil said. "He's my little boy and I know that he's afraid. I know that he's scared. I need him to come home."
To those who don't own dogs, $2,500 might seem like too much money to get a pet back. But others here at the beach say they would do the same.
"I would be heartbroken," said Kevin Ward. "I would give anything to get my dog back."
"I would definitely probably pay someone the same amount," said Maggie Duplace.
"He's been my rock for the past four months that I've had him," Blabolil said. "We've spent every minute of every day together. He needs me."
Many others are helping Blabolil try to find Che, including her mother who's here from Ohio.
"I know what Che means to Becky," said mother Diane Blabolil. "That's what you do when you're a mom, you know, you take care of your kids."
Rebecca said she had never had a dog before Che. The puppy is brown and white, a very rare bred because of his blue-green eyes and soft coat. If you find Che or know where he might be, click on the e-mail link below:
