Cops: Victim In NW Indiana Shooting Wrong Target
PORTAGE, Ind. (Post-Tribune) ―
A man who was shot to death last week by a pair demanding money was the wrong target, Portage, Ind. police say.
Jeremiah "Jeremy" Higgins was shot twice on May 15 in his apartment at the Canden Apartments complex on Willowcreek Road in Portage.
Detective Terry Swickard said the male suspect repeatedly demanded money and said the name "Tommy" multiple times.
"Nobody that Jeremiah and his friends knew was known as Tommy," Swickard said. "Now, we know they had the wrong apartment."
Around 11:15 p.m., police said a woman knocked on Higgins' door and asked for Tommy. A roommate opened the door and said no one lived there by that name. A male barged in with a gun, demanding money, Swickard said.
Higgins and the man struggled and Higgins was shot in the head and twice in the chest. Higgins was pronounced dead at the Porter hospital Portage Campus.
Police describe the male as dark-skinned, believed to be in his early to mid-20s, between 6 feet to 6 feet 3 inches tall, of medium build and with short cropped hair.
The woman is described as having a medium skin tone, possibly Hispanic or biracial, in her early to mid-20s, between 5-feet-5 inches to 5-feet-7 inches tall and with long black hair.
Portage police are offering a reward of up to $10,000.
