Indiana Girl Flees Police, Causes Fatal Crash
78-Year-Old Man Dies When His Minivan Is Broadsided
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (Post-Tribune) ―
A man was killed when a 16-year-old girl fleeing police ran a red light and crashed into his car Thursday in Michigan City, Ind.
Frank Wojcik, 78, of Michigan City, Ind., was pronounced dead at St. Anthony's Hospital after his minivan was broadsided by a Volvo on Michigan Boulevard in Michigan City.
The juvenile girl suffered a broken arm and was also taken to the hospital. Charges are pending.
About 11 a.m., Michigan City police stopped the girl for a traffic offense in the 900 block of Woodland Avenue.
The officer was going to his car to take enforcement action when the driver fled. The officer turned on his siren and emergency lights and radioed that he was pursuing the Volvo.
As they were driving west on Michigan Boulevard, the officer radioed he was terminating his pursuit due to the heavy traffic on that road.
The Volvo then ran a red light as it entered the intersection of Michigan Blvd. and Vale Street and hit Wojcik's car, which was turning east on Michigan Boulevard.
Another Michigan City police car was struck by the Volvo as it was sitting at the red light on eastbound Michigan Boulevard.
The Michigan City police officer that was hit was also taken to Saint Anthony's and was treated and released for complaint of pain.
The intersection was closed for almost two hours for reconstruction of the crash, removal of the injured and vehicles, and clean-up of the road.
LaPorte County Sheriff's Department, LaPorte County Prosecutor, LaPorte County EMS, Indiana State Police Motor Carrier Division, Michigan City Street Department and Michigan City Fire Department assisted on the call.
